I recently purchased a 430 that has an alternator. I think they were supposed to have generators, but were they 6 or 12 volt?

The 430 came from the factory with a DELCO 1101859 6 volt gen. There were two starters for the 430, one that was the standard, DELCO 1107165 and one was call the heavy duty DELCO 1108072. The regulator was a DELCO 1119575. The system was a POS ground and the wiring dig is showen on page 80-10-3 of the JOHN DEERE tect manuel SM2019. We converted ours to 12Volt single wire ALT with a NEV ground system as we use ours in the winter and all four of our tractors and the JEEP have the same 12V alt. Just like I have posted in the past about useing the same oil (FARM OYL GP3 30#) in everything, I like to have everything wired the same way on everything, Sure saves time when you have to trouble shoot a problem As to what can be done with electrictral systems,,,, the factory rebuilding shop we work with can convert anything to anything you want. They can make up a 6 Volt ALT and starters a 12V ALT and starters or a 24V ALT starters, in eather POS or NEV systems.

I have a 430, 1959 model I think. They came with a 6 volt positive ground generator. Mine always started slow and I wanted to add some lights. When the generator went bad on my MT and battery in 430 was going bad, I decided to put an alternator on and go to 12 volts. It now starts great in any temperature. There is lots of discussion here and lots of guys say the 6 volt is adequate and you should stay original. I would never go back to it but my tractor is a user not a collector.

Ken,
They came with a 6 volt generator, positive ground system. I also have one that the previous owner converted to a 12 volt alternator. It works good but I really wish it had the original 6 volt system on it.

well if its pre 1960 it was probaly 6 volt I have yet to see a 6 volt alternator so some one probably added it they do work better the the gen. did and it probably did have a gen. on it when new
