We are in the process of installing an auxilary hydraulic pump and the additional lines that make up a hydraulic enhancement kit on our 4020. This is supposed to eliminate the chatter in the lines when using the loader. Have any of you ever installed one of these? The problem we are having is where to run the pressure line from the new pump. The kit is supposed to contain all the lines and fittings needed, but the instructions are sort of vague as to where to tap in with the pressure line. We think that we have the feed line figured out. It is supposed to feed oil from the port just ahead of the left side final drive. My question is where does the other line tap in? As always, any assistance you can give is greatly appreciated.

Bob F.

P.S. if it makes any difference, the tractor is a synchro and not a power shift.

The thing is: When you push the clutch in on a 4020 syncro range, the charge pump in the rearend/transmision stops turning and does not supply the main hydraulic pump up front, which causes the chatter, it's starving for oil. One way to combate this is when you push in the clutch to stop and raise the loader, slip it into neutral between 5Th and 2nd Rev., let the clutch out, raise your loader and then push in the clutch, grab a gear and go. It can become 2nd nature, I used to move a lot of bales back home on the farm before I grew up and had to get a real job!! ;>)

If you have chattering lines, there's a problem with your tractor. Have you done any checks like the filter and screen. Also who's kit is this, and what port are you referring too, the suction line or the screen plug. If you go to the suction elbow for your feed, then your add on kit should chatter also because if your main pump chatters from not getting enough oil, what do you think your add on will do? Does your kit come with a filter also, otherwise what filters the oil? Is your 4020 early or late? You could possibly go to the elbow in front of the brake pedals for your pressure line. I'm not being a smartass but just want to help you out. You might contact the dealer of your kit for assistance. Feel free to email back good/bad chris

The chatter I'm talking about occurs mainly when using the loader extensively and at the same time using the clutch a lot to shift back and forth form 3rd to R1 or 5th and R2. As I understand it this was a fairly common ailment with the new generation models caused by starving the pump when using clutch extensively. The kit is just called a Hydraulic Enhancement Kit and I think is put together by a local distributor called Marv and Zip's in New Hampton Iowa. I do plan to call them but wondered if anyone on this forum had any previous experience doing this. Sorry for my ignorance I'm just a weekend warrior not a professional mechanic. (By the way for the rest of you guys, I grew up on an AC 190XT. I blame it for my partial hearing loss. The day my dad traded it in for a 4020 was one of the happiest in my life. After having run both models I'll keep my 4020 Thank You Very Much)

I thought the 4020 was flawless or so I've been told. My 190xt never chatters. You could sell the 4020 and by a 190 for half of your profit and then play with the other half. Maybe buy a project tractor.

Greg has a good point, it gets really old holding her in gear for any length of time! Oh and also why would he want a tractor that would burn more full? I mean on the 200 I've run we had to run it at 2000 RPM just to get any speed at all from the hyds, unlike the 4020 which can idle around cutting fuel cost. If we didnt run the 200 at 2000 rpm. then we'd be all day just trying to load 12 bales! And that power director, what a joke! We only pull a baler with ours, it was replaced about 5 years ago and is already slipping, if you go up a hill in 4th hi you can smell it buring the clutches in it. Well sorry for jumping on my soapbox!!!
John

At least you don't have to hold a 4020 gear shifter in third gear as you go over a hill,to keep it from popping out of gear, like you do with most 190, and 200's after they get wear on them. By the way, bought any AC parts lately. I have, and needless to say I'd much rather go to the Jd dealer than the Agco- when something does break on an older tractor. $$$$$$$ I like AC, but Agco ruined the name, and yanks you on the parts suppley. Later, Greg H.
