I have an LX277 with the 48" deck. It is not even 1yr old. It is mowing uneven. I have put new blades on it to no avail. I have been told that I probably have a bent shaft. Can somebody tell me how to check that out? How do I replace the shaft if it is bent. The dealership told me that that would not be warrantied. Imagine that.

Jack:

While a bent shaft can cause such a problem, don't forget to check to see if a blade tip is bent downward. It happens more often than you think. My kids used to hit a particular cut-off stump with my 214 and would occassionally skew a blade tip. Then I chewed my kids, then I had the stump chewed out.

If it's bent, throw it away. You'll never get it to stay straight.

Check your operators manual. First set your tire pressures, then on a level floor measure from the floor to the blade tips. They should be the same from side to side (adjustable with the lift arms) and about 1/4" lower in the front when measuring front to rear. The dealer sells a nifty blade height guage #TY15272 If you find one blade out of whack, loosen it and turn it 1/2 turn on the shaft to check for a bent shaft.

Not trying to be a smart ellic, but i'd check the air in the rear ties first. If one is low it will mow crooked.

Check to see if the shaft is bent, most of the time where the hub bolts onto the deck, is where the bending takes place. Usually all you have to do is take the deck out from under the mower, clean off the top so you can see, take the hub off thats giving problems and check to see if the deck flanges are bent. 99% of the time thats the problem. Just take a hammer and a block of wood on the other side, knock it back straight and flush and you are good to go. Good Luck

I'm not the resident mower guru, but a bent shaft should cause a pretty serious vibration, as fast as those blades are turning. Have you tried levelling the mower deck itself?
