I bought a used 10 ft bush hog that needs a new main driveshaft. The U-joints are the tpye you just take a pair of needle nose pliers and remove the clips...but the thing doesnt just fall apart then. I don't want to ruin the rubber seals around the bearings---any input appreciated. How do I get this thing apart ...I just need to get the U-joints loose. Thanks.

I agree with Thurlow - it's not worth the time to try and preserve the old u-joint. It's probably not in the best shape anyway. If you're replacing the shaft, I assume you're wanting to salvage the yoke. A little heat on the yoke around the u-joint cups will help remove them. When going back together, use some anti-sieze in the cup bores and on the cups to aid in future disassembly. If the joint is tight when you get it back together, give the yokes a good smack on the area next to cap bores. That will allow the caps to move out into proper position and free it up. It should not bind at all when properly assembled. Also pay close attention to the grease zerk location on the new cross, and make sure to position it so that you can grease it easily with the shaft assembled.

ChadR; you're not apt to ruin the rubber seals; would have to screw it up pretty badly to do that. New cross and bearings will have new seals anyway. Most likely, you will have to take the shaft apart/off the machine to get the cross/bearings separated. Will need to use either a press or a good vise. Can use a hammer and anvil with appropriate sized pipe, socket etc, but you're much more apt to mess it up doing that. All of the bearing cups have to come out to the "outside".
