I have a crankshaft pulley that has a deep groove worn in it by the oil seal. Tried polishing with some very fine emery cloth but the groove is too deep to come out. What is the best fix for this problem? Would powder coating this surface be a good solution to the problem or would the powder coat wear away too fast? Thanks, AWB

Speedi-sleeves are made by Chicago Rawhide better know today as CR seals just for the need you have. They are stainless steel with a tapered edge for kindness toward the new seal. Put some silicone rubber on your rough surface and hammer the sleeve on with the driver that comes with the sleeve. Tear off the driven flange with a pair of pliars and your good as new for $14.

Don't put the new seal in the same place, put the
new seal lip on either side of the old groove,
and it's on new metal.Chances are the new seal
will be wider or narrower than the old one you
took out anyhow.

AWB, depending on what the pulley is on, it's use, what's driven by it, & other controlling factors, you have some options.
~The first is to try to find or make a thin sleeve to slide over the area that the seal rides on [such as something like that speedi-sleeve that gwh mentioned]
~Depending on the pulley mounting, use options, & seal bore configuration, you could also try using a different thickness seal so the seal lip rides in a different place on the pulley hub, or even use 2 thin seals where one thick one was used. Maybe even drive the seal in to a different location so the lip doesn't line up with that groove.
~The other option is to machine a little off the pulley hub or space the pulley out slightly farther so the seal rides on a different place on the pulley hub.
~The point of the above is....either repair the place on the pulley where the seal rides, or move the seal so it rides on a good spot on the pulley , or move the pulley so the bad spot doesn't line up with the seal..... ..

AWB,Take your pulley to a NAPA type auto supply and ask if they have a "speedi-sleeve" kit to fit. gwh
