My tractor runs but not well. The idle is good but at full throttle it is suffering. It will run well and then all of a sudden act like it is out of gas. If I pull the choke out about a 1/4 pull it will run again. Then it will just start to blow black smoke and run really rough. It ran fine last fall when I plowed using a 3 bottom but now it will barely move itself in 4th gear. Any suggestion as to what the trouble might be. I am thinking either carb or valves. Am I thinking right? If so, what do I do?

Just spent an entire afternoon cleaning the oil bath/ air cleaner on an H that I am rebuilding. I knew it would be dirty but this was packed with muck and many generations of dirt dobber's nests. Just an idea--No air-No run. God Bless. Joe

If it passes all the fuel flow tests, and it still does the poor performance you described, take the oil bath air cleaner bowl off and change the oil. My B did that when I brought it home and there was water in the oil bath. At low RPM there was enough passage of free air, but as soon as I cracked the throtle, the water came into the intake with the air and it acted the same way. I just thought this might help. ---===] jer [===---

Wes,

I have an identical problem with a '48 B. It smoked a little since I've had it, but still had plenty of power. I let it set out all winter (and we had a bad winter) and now it is acting exactly like yours. I know the plugs are bad, and will replace them first, but I agree with the others that we may have a fuel/carb problem. I'll let you know if I have any success solving the problem.

My best test for carb problems is to turn the mixture screw out till it blows black smoke. If it comes clear out of the carb and you got no black smoke then you need to take the carb apart and clean some passages in there. Same with idle mixture screw. If either screw has no effect then it needs work. You should be able to also kill the engine due to leaness going the other way with either and both screws - but only do one screw at a time.

If it passes that test then check for fuel flow issues by opening drain or removing bowl to see if a good pencil sized stream of fuel will flow. You've got screens in the fuel tank, sediment bowl and carb bowl that all need to be checked for gunk plugging them up.

Sounds like not getting enough fuel flow to carb.

Wes:

If it ran well until this year, I wouldn't think valves just up and changed lash, or began to stick.

Do you have a full thirty seconds of free flowing fuel out of the carb ? Like a pencil sized stream. On our'48 "A" one time we had some sediment settle in the outport to the sediment bowl, and it acted like you describe.

Look for a fuel flow problem first.
