I picked up a 720lp a couple of months ago with a bad trans.. I found a 730 diesel - engine but with the trans,I bought it and swap the trans to the 720lp....NOW I notice that my 730LP has a different shifting pattern..The rail on the 720lp are 1&3top R-2-5 middle and 4&6 on the bottom,,,,,NOW the 730LP is 2&5 top,,R-1-4 middle and 3&6 bottom,,If these are the same tractors why is my 730LP trans Different??I checked the manual and does not show it.Ben

Ben, your 730LP has the optional trans gears, depending on the ground speeds you either have the optional 3rd, or 3rd 4th or 5th gear sets. With all that trans swapping you really need to drive the tractor to verify that the quadrant matches the gear sets in the trans. I have seen the wrong quadrants installed on tractors in the past. That seems to happen a lot when an optional gear was installed but the quadrant wasn't swapped to match the trans gears. Try to drive the tractor & if the upper left slot is the slowest you have the standard gear set [well you still could have the optional 4th gear]. If the upper left slot is faster than the marked 1st gear you have some optional gears [either 3rd or 3rd & 5th]. If you want to count gear teeth you can use the parts manual & find out exactly what you have.....Let me know if you want more info & I can E-Mail you a gear + speed chart...

Thanks Clooney..The 720lp and the diesel have the same trans. no problem there.. I notice that my 730lp was different from those two, the gear quadrant is number different also. What are the advantages to this, if any? I was showing that to my brother today, and I (we) were just curious of why they were different.. I have the operators manual for my 730lp and the service manual for the 720lp. I have not read into it yet to see if anything is stated about the optional trans. once again thanks. this is good info, to know that I have a odd ball tractor. Yes E mail me the ground speed gear chart. Ben

Ben, I'm not sure what all those optional gear sets were used for. With the optional 3rd [that drives a quadrant change] you lose the nice low creeper 1st gear. The old second becomes the new 1st gear. I have a diesel 720 with the optional gear sets & really like that 8+ MPH 5th gear as it is perfect for moderate speed wagon or rough road transport. The optional 3rd also gives you a 1 MPH higher 6th gear.
