Got the rear end cover off, piston out and cylinder off. The gaskets are coming in from deere tomorrow and I've spent the last 2 hours in the archives, to no avail, looking for info about the hydraulic cylinder gasket. Should I use some kind of tack, or put it on dry? Also I noticed that the bolts don't have lock-washers,should they? I got the book from deere (service manual #SM2011) so I know that I have to torque the bolts to 150 lbs. Also on the pto pump: do I use shelac like the book says, or is there something maybe better? Also my piston cup is leather, do I need to soak the new one overnight? Well thanks in advance. morgan

Morgan, you're correct to question that cylinder gasket & the use of sealer. First, do not use any soft sealer, or sealer that remains soft like Permatex. Due to the pressure that gasket has to retain it should either be installed dry, or a hardening type gasket reinforcement used. Most people just install that gasket dry, but due to the rather poor quality of gaskets Deere is supplying lately I always use Loc-Tite 515 or 518 gasket replacement/reinforcement. That is an anaerobic sealer that dries with lack of air. The problem with that sealer is you will have to wait a few days to put full pressure on the system so it is completely hardened first... I'm sure there are other sealers out there that are also hardening & add reinforcement to the gasket, just don't use anything that remains soft that will allow the gasket to migrate under pressure.
~The bolts should be drilled for lock safety wire & don't use lock washers. Make sure you wind the safety wire through the bolt holes in the proper direction so it wants to keep them tight & not in the direction to pull them loose. [I always use Lock-Tite 262 on the bolt threads anyway]
~You can use shellac on the pump body halves but I always use a very thin layer of Loc-Tite 518 gasket eliminator.
~On the bolt torque, I never torque those bolts [probably should though] & 150' lbs sounds about right for those 5/8-11 bolts.
