I have been rebuilding an Edison-Splitdorf magneto and have a few of questions. What type of lubrication should I use on the points cam, I know Ive seen this before but cant find it now. Ive heard that jewelers rouge it the best for cleaning points, what do you use? Also, what is the best way to store a magneto as to minimize magnetism loss, should the rotor be left in the neutral position? Thanks!

Mark, I use Delco distributor cam lube. While almost any grease like Lubriplate will work, one of the most important functions of that grease is to stay put & not wear off with use. It also has to stay grease like & not dry out. Regular chassis grease is not recommended due to it getting stiff when cold & not allowing the points to close. Most auto parts stores have little tubes of special distributor cam lube & some now even have a synthetic cam lube.
~To tell you the truth I use about anything that is handy to clean points [probably shouldn't though]. As a rule I just replace them [just points as I never replace a working condenser]. On your Edison-Splitdorf the points are hard to find & quite expensive so you really want to be careful cleaning them. Once cleaned they tend to oxidize again quickly. I would suggest you try an electronics tuner or contact cleaner [non abrasive], then run a piece of clean white paper through the points. If that cleans them enough to work just leave it at that, if they still wont work use a very fine sand paper & make sure you get ALL the abrasive out from between the points. While I havent ever used jewelers rouge, that might work good. [get all the residue removed]
~On storing the mag? That magnet on the Edison-Splitdorf is external [not in the rotor] so just having the rotor in there will keep the magnetic flux & not allow the magnet to loose its magnetism. Caution: with the rotor out of the mag body put a piece of steel across the magnet or the magnet will loose its charge. The magnet wont hold its charge long with the rotor out of the mag body.
