I'm going to replace the head gasket on my late model 60 this weekend and had a couple of questions regarding the manifold in this process:
Will I have to remove the intake/exhaust manifold to get the head off?
If so, what (if anything) should I use for a thread sealer/locker when I go to installing the 6 mainfold bolts (planning on buying six 7/16" x 4-1/4" grade 5's for this)?
Thanks in advance!

Of the service manuals I have (JD50 & 720), neither of them require removal of the manifold to remove the head. Either way, it takes a bit of work. Good luck.

Hi agian Al, When I replace any manifold bolts or studs, I chase the head threads with a tap and apply anti sieze on the new bolts or studs. I dont usually use any sealer, unless its a stud hole which is exposed to coolant (I dont think so on 60's, but seems like some older lettered series were???? maybe the G ?????), in which case I would use teflon thread tape and/or liquid teflon thread dope.

I debate whether to use grade 5 or 8, and usually go with 8 and stainless steel or brass nuts on studs. However, if a hardened one ever broke, drilling it out would be a bear. But I figure at my age and with good clean threads and ant sieze lube, I shouldnt live long enough to have that worry again. I also apply anti sieze on all the bolt or stud, hoping it wont bond to the manifold anywhere.

Let us know what you decide. Seems like the manifold dont need to come off??? but Im too lazy to go look and too forgetful to rememeber since I had a 60 lol.

Take care. Ol John T
