Dan's answer pretty much sums it up. I have a 1948 Model A with power-trol and it is a decent system but quite low pressure, in the hundreds of pounds. I only use mine to pick up the front of logs a little when I skid them so the chain does not wear and the log does not dig in.

They were sort of primitive to what was offered on other makes of tractors at that time however. It is not a "live" hydraulic system. In other words you have to have the clutch engaged to operate it and ditto the PTO, which also only runs with the clutch engaged.

Powertrol was, is, the hydraulic control on the older 2 cylinder JD tractors. It had a lever on the side to raise or lower the rockshaft. It also had outlets on the back for a remote hydraulic cylinder. There are special plugs used in the remote outlets to use the rockshaft instead of cylinder. You can't use both at the same time. The power trol allowed the user to lift an implement on the rockshaft and stop at any height desired. The forerunner to the powertrol was the power lift. It also operated the rockshaft but the implement was all the way up or all the way down. It used pedals located just ahead of the rockshaft housing under the seat. By pushing down on the pedals you activated the lift to raise or lower. I believe the power trol was really a very good hydraulic control in it's day. I am not sure when it was introduced or when it was last used.
