Saw a calendar that had a picture of a General Purpose, but the info said it was a Model B. This confused me because I thought General Purpose was first, then A, B, G, H, and M came along. Can someone please tell me what the history is?

The very early tractors were not "general purpose". They were limited to plowing, tilling, and heavy work in general.TnemodelGP was the first John Deere Tractor which was useful for cultivating, planting, belt work, and pulling PTO driven machines. The "general purpose" was carried along with the A, B, And G presumeably to stress that is was a very useful tractor.

Darren,

The GP did come along before the A and B, but the A and B had the words General Purpose on the sides of the hood, possibly until they were styled for the 1939 model year (note that I said "possibly" - not totally sure).

The unstyled G may have had the General Purpose on the hood as well - again, not sure, but someone will correct me if I've given bad info here.

Stan
