On my 46 A, there is a black thick oil pouring out of the axle housing on the end next to the tire. looks like grease mixed with lub. I know I have to change the seal, What kind of trouble am I going to have doing this? It just started doing this yesterday. Any helpful hints? Thanks

Morgan, Your job ahead shouldnt be too bad. you will have to begin by draing the rear end oil and pull the back off of your tractor (power lift or flat back) Seat box removal may be on the agenda. The wheel will have to be removed from whichever side you are replacing You will then have to pull the bull gear off by losening the nut on it. I used a bar stuck through both gears to lock them together to losen the nuts. I then used the other bullgear nut to push the axle out of the housing by prying against is with a bar. This will also push the felt grease seal out the end of your axle housing. you will most likley want to replace these felt seals also, as they will be full of the oil that is leaking from your housing. The felt grease gaskets are still available from Deere at a reasonable price. I got my inside oil seals from NAPA. They worked fine. Examine your axle bearings while your in there. They may be in need of replacing. Be sure to clean out your housing between axle seal near bull gears and the grease seal near the wheel, as if oil is left in this hollow part of your housing it will ooze past the felt grease seal ending up on your wheel again. The best of luck. If I didnt make myself clear on any of this please bring it to my attention. I would be glad to help.
