Is it injectors or fuel pump?

I went to a plow day this morning and took my 730D and JD 3 bottom drag plow. The tractor was pulling good and the plow was working real good for not having plowed in over 40 years.

At one point either an injector started malfunctioning or its pump did. However it was intermittant and I can't tell when this is going to take place. Sometimes under load it would do this, sometimes when just easing along with the plow out of the ground. I just had the injectors rebuilt. They weren't giving trouble but I wanted it done before I started working with it.

Where do you think I should start to check this out?

THE FUEL FILTERS SHOULD HAVE STOPPED THE WATER. IS THERE WATER IN THE SEDIAMENT BOWL? I WOULD BLEED THE FILTERS AND THE RACK TO SEE WHAT IS IN THERE.ENOUGH WATER WILL PLUG THE FILTERS AND KILL THE POWER. DON

J. Logsdon, are you sure it's an injector or a pump problem? You might want to check for a sticking engine valve or water in the fuel. If nothing found there you will either have to send the pumps & injectors back to the rebuilder for testing or wait until it acts up steady enough to isolate the problem...

Clooney, you made me think about what happened. I poured some diesel from a 5 gallon can into the tractors tank about ten minutes before I noticed this happening. I was also going up out of a dry creek (maybe the water moved to the port) because when I added fuel it didn't seem to take it at all; either of the cylinders. There must be some water in my tank.

How does the engine act if it gets water in an injector, just miss or will some steam be seen?

I think I will drain the fuel and start all over. Thanks for the suggestion

John, it depends on how much water is present, how hot the engine is, & what engine/tractor has the water in it. It could easily have caused your miss.
~Do the fuel drain & let it settle, then put the bottom 1" or so in a clear bottle & let it settle again to see if there is water in it.
