I purchased a430W this winter and am going over it getting ready for the summer. The steering system jerks back and forth when turning the steering wheel. With the front end jacked off the ground the wheels jerk back and forth rapidly. Would this be a problem in the steering valvue or the steering cylinder? I also discovered yesterday that the main nozzle in the carburator is all chewed up on the bottom screwdriver slot. How do you remove the main nozzle in this condition? Thanks for any information you can give.

Try the steering with the tractor on the ground. You may need some resistance, with no weight on the wheels everything is too loose and reacts to much.

With the wheels on the ground there is still a jerking of the steering shaft. I do need new tie rod ends on one side but I don't think that that is what is causing it. In the service manual I have it doesn't look like there is much to go wrong in the steering valve unless it would be a pin with too much wear or leaking O ring.

Dave, it's been many years since I have worked with one of those late Dubuque P/S systems & even then I didn't do much with them. About all I can add is it sure sounds like a steering control valve or pressure problem. All the cylinder does is react to the system pressure.
~On that main nozzle problem, that is a tough thing to deal with. If you try too hard or try using an easy out you could expand it & make it real difficult to remove. More than likely it's the way it is because it is already stuck in there tight. The thing that usually works is heat but that main nozzle is to far up in the hole to get a flame to. If you can get that nozzle hot then let it cool you might be able to use a good square bladed screwdriver & tap it with a hammer while turning it in the removing direction. If nothing else works you will probably have to use a left handed drill bit & drill it out. With any luck the L/H drill bit will catch after you start drilling & screw the jet out....

Dave, I can't help on the power steering. But for it to idle and run correctly, the main nozzle must be clean and all those tiny holes open. Those are a bugger to remove. Since the screwdriver slot is gone, you will have to destroy it to get it out, drill a hole all way through it, use an ease out and heat with a torch. Heat the cast iron surrounding the nozzle. If this fails, drill and get it out in pieces, being careful not to damage the threads in the cast iron. You can get a new nozzle from Roberts or any of the carb. parts suppliers. The last one I bought from Roberts was $25

Thanks for the information. I've never had to drill a nozzle out before. I guess i've been lucky. I have another TSX carb out in the shop, maybe it has the same nozzle in it. A friend gave it to me several years ago - said I might need it sometime. This will be as good a time as any.
