JD70Jim is right about the serial number breaks. Also, these changes were made in mid-year, so there are both unstyled and styled 1942 models and both GM and late styled G 1947 models.

But other wise I agree with you.

Go to the sidebar to the left.

Click on "Serial Numbers"

The list shows the "styled G" without identifing GM ans G, but the serial break for GM and the u/s G was at 12,999/13,000. The G returned in 1947 @ sn 23,000.

were all Gs from serial 13000 to 23000 known as GMs; I was told those made right after WW II , in early 46 until late 47 were the GMs thanks, bill

In 1941, John deere was about to introduce a STYLED "G", to replace the unstyled version. It would COST more to produce than the old version.

However, WAR with Japan and Germany had just broken out, and the WARTIME PRODUCTION BOARD would not permit John deere a price increase for the new tractor if the tractor were to be called a "G", hence, John Deere renamed it the "GM" or "G Modern", and they got their price increase.

Unfortunately, the GM wasn't produced right away because Deere could build TWO "B" tractors for the amount of materials used to build ONE GM. After only a small production run, the GM was suspended until 1944 when materials to build farm tractors were made available.

After the was, when John Deere restyled the GM again, @ sn 23,000 (when they gave it the battery box seat) and since the was was over, it was simply renamed "G" again.
