I am mostly a hobby farmer. I do some hay, a little corn, and a little wheat. I have had several smaller John Deeres like 2640's and am going to buy somthing bigger. What would be the best JD for someone like me. I don't need anything like a 6030 but a decent tractor around 100 horse.

I am confuzzed here big time. I thought the post said he was a "HOBBY" farmer and most of the tractors listed below are bigger then I or the guys around here have trying to make a living.

A 4020 would be a tractor for you. I like the 4230 and 4430s better, but 4020 a good tractor.

I agree with JDman. My JD 7400 is the greatest tractor I have ever owned. I still like my 3010 diesel for the small jobs

depends what kind of conveniences you want. if you would like a nice fairly quiet a/c cab and getting in places with low overhead room is not a problem then you would have to go with a new generation tractor like a 4230 or 4430 or later. if you are satisfied with an open station then the field is wide open and like always depends on your pocket book. there is nothing like new if you can afford it. but if your limited go with a well cared for late model 4020. i prefer a powershift but the syncro was alright too. mho.

How many acres are you working? I'm not up on what I consider "newer" tractors, but what HP is a 2640?

my vote go to a 4020 or a 3020. I 'd say a 4020 got a good 95 hp engines. just like my 71 JD 4000 does have a 95 hp engine. it's a good great tractor I would't NEVER let it go!

I believe the man asked, on the JOHN DEERE page, which JOHN DEERE he should get! If he'd wanted a farmall, wouldn't he have asked on the FARMALL page?

Some other fine suggestions:

4320, 4230, 4430, 4240, 4000

Guess I'd recommend a 4020 that's been cared for or reconditioned. Don't know where G.T. is coming from, but those older tractors are way better than the JAP/MEX junk Deere is building today.

Used 4440's go cheap and are robust. As for new tractors the two cylinder loyalists didn't care for the 4010/4020 either in the 60's. The stripped down 95HP 6603 is everything the old 4020 was and more with MFWD. The 6615/ 105 HP 6715 has way more to offer. The 90HP 6420,95HP 7220 and 105 HP 7320 are outright deluxe. Manufactures are going off shore to cut costs because Joe farmer will purchase the cheapest HP. I would feel no shame driving/owning a 6715. I'll trade before warrenty is up on esential equipment. Costs less to trade than repair old stuff.

Check the deere site. They have those stripped down economy 6000 series tractors. Pretty much a new 4020 with improved emmisions and fuel economy. Can even get MFWD. With warrenty and without the age related bugs of a 30 to 35 year old tractor.
