Took the sending unit out of the tank in preparation for cleaning and found the brass float half full of gas and full of little pin holes.John Deere has no replacement available..... what would be a good replacement to hang on the end for a float. The tank opening is about 1 and 3/8 inches. I was thinking about brazing a float from a carb onto the wire. How about glueing on a plastic fuel filter with the ends closed off ? How have you repaired the float ? Thanks for any IDEAS, Rich

Standard repair method for Brass floats would be dabs of solder on those pin holes after the gasoline evaporated out of it. I'd use a soldering iron with liquid flux for plumbing use on it. That won't stop it from making new pin holes though. A replacement brass float would be the best way to avoid the pin hole problem, but I would search for one made of fairly thick brass for insurance.

As of a year or so ago Ford had replacement brass gas gauge floats available. I think they would be similar to yours. A friend of mine has two extra, about $6.00 each, if memory serves. Email if interested, and I'll get exact price for the ones he has, and the Ford part#, if you want to check locally, if they're still available from Ford.

Sorry email didn't work for you. I've gotten several today from others, so it should have worked. Friend was not around today, so I could get Ford part# for you. I'll post it Monday, or email me again.

Steve from mo - dry it out and coat it.

If nothing else comes available, dry the thing out and coat the outside with fuel-proof epoxy. That shouldn't change the weight or volume noticeably. Gentle heat - like an infrared heat lamp - would hurry the drying out part.

I would look for a float off another fuel sender. The 4020 sender floats look very simalar. Even a automotive float could work.

ET:

I agree.

What you could do, would be to take the old one and calculate it's displacement. This would be a way to detemine if a replacement carb float has the right buoyancy, too.

Fill a cup clear to the top with water, push the old leaky float into it, and then measure how much water was lost. Just don't wait too long or the leaky float will have water in it.

Now go to the parts store, and compare sending unit floats. You'll find a match.

I have a universal sender I bought from Pepboys, and it has a plastic float with it that I that bet would fit.

I'll check the volume on both today !

I would use a carb float. You should be able to solder this on with no problem. As long as it floats, I see no problem as a matter of fact isn't the old float like a carb float. I would go with the solder for securing purposes. One thing to check would be the rheostate to make sure it's working. John T. or others know the technical principal, mine is that this is gradually producing a short as the float goes up or is a variable grounding device. I bet you that the man in Colorado has some of these if you have enough money. Good luck.
