I had my carb cleaned by a John Deere service garage a couple years age--$60 charge. The tractor needs the choke pulled partially out to run ok. I have replaced the rubber filters(double) above the glass bulb. Does this sound like a carb that should go to Roberts or are the ones sold by this sponsor YT Mag just as good for a fix? I looking for a cheap fix! Thanks, Mike

Mike, if you send it to Roberts, it wont be cheap probably, but it will be close to good as new once its returned. Like clooney told ya first though, insure the carbs bowl is getting a good fuel supply by checking as he instructed, and you might also totally remove the fuel line off the carb and hold down the low oil pressure shut off there at top the sediment bowl (loosen knurled screw, then hold it down to defeat the shut off and let gas flow free) and make sure theres a full ID line size of gas flow out the sediment bowl and through the line continuously. If the strainer he was talking about is clean and free and you have good flow through the line and into the bowl assembly and she still needs choke, then you may have a restricted jet, passage or nozzle etc. (assuming the needle and float and float level etc is okay and bowl has plenty of gas) in which cace you gotta get into it or send off for repairs. I dont do much duplex carb work, so if you rebuild it yourslef you need somebody smarter than me to guide you. Have you done any power adjustment at the bottom of the bowl lately, that lil brass screw slot, open it out a tad????

Best Wishes God Bless the USA Ol John T Nordhoff

Mike, it does sound like a fuel problem, maybe it's just a plugging inlet strainer in the carb. Pull the hex bolt on the carb [above the where the fuel line enters the carb] & make sure the inlet strainer isn't plugged.

~Next, unscrew the knurled nut on top of the tank fuel shut-off, then open the carb bowl drain, then hold that knurled nut down & make sure you have a pencil sized steam of fuel flowing for 30 seconds plus. [if not, find out why or post back]

~If all ok per above try opening the load needle [in the center of the bowl nut] 1/2 turn more at a time & see if that helps, open 1/2 turn at a time until it is open 2-3 turns more & see if it gets better.

~If still no better, pull the float bowl & look for rust in the bowl, then pull the main metering nozzles from the bottom of the main wells & make sure all the little side holes are open [common problem].

~If still nothing found post back for other options.

~I presume it ran ok after the carb clean out & just lately got worse? If it has always been bad since the carb work, post back for different places to look.

Thanks for the feedback. Immediately after having the carb cleaned I had the problem needing to 1/2 choke to keep it going. Maybe the restriction was further up towards the tank. I did not adjust any of the needles. You have given me some good information to follow. Thanks again. Mike

Mike, if the problem showed up after the carb work if could be an improper carb setting, or something that was missed during the overhaul.

~You should probably start with the easy things like the fuel flow test, then try the load screw adjustment.

~If neither of those improve, or point to the problem you probably should pull the float bowl & check those main nozzles for plugging & also make sure the float is set correctly [I always just set the float top level [parallel with the bowl gasket surface].

~I guess if the carb has a good fuel supply, the float is set correctly, the main nozzles aren't plugged, & the load screw isn't set too lean, you will have to pull the carb apart, or if you don't feel comfortable doing that send it to a professional carb shop.
