60 Head Gasket

Here's a new topic, huh?
Has anyone ever tried an aftermarket 60 head gasket (if they're even available), or are the Deere #A6120R the best there is?
Also, In searching previous posts I've seen a lot of people have good results with "Permatex #3". Is Permatex #3 actually "Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket Sealant"?
Head and block were both milled so I'm starting with good mating surfaces....
When I do it I'm going to replace the studs with Deere studs to compensate for 48 years of stretching, but the lead washers are no longer available (according to Deere's web-site). When referring to using "hardened washers and nuts", are we talking about some off-the-shelf grade 8's?
Thanks in advance!

I've heard of people going to NAPA for full metal (front and back) head gaskets in this group. The consensus was to paint them with aluminumized spray paint on both sides and put the head on while the paint was still sticky. But that didn't apply to me as my head gasket came from John Deere had tough silicone rubber film on both sides. Anyone else run into these? A first for this 50 year old mechanic, and I was impressed with it.

Al,
I followed the directions in the manual by soaking a JD gasket in engine oil, then letting it drain, and installing it. So far, 3 yrs. and no leaks, both surfaces were nice, clean, and flat.

If you need some of the washers, let me know, as I have 2-25ct. bags of them (dealer over ordered, and they gave me a good deal to get rid of them).E-mail me your adress and I'll send you enough to do your head. That is the least I can do for you looking up the PN's for me!

Talk to you later, Pat

I use a fel-pro on my A. Its part # 7744sbx (I think) It has a full metal sheet on one side, so it is stronger than the fiber Deere gasket. Besides that, its half the cost. Any auto parts store should be able to order it for you.

Since I work in a Deere dealer parts dept, I can tell you that the parts catalogs for consumers that are on line are not worth a whole lot. The lead washers are all the same for the tractors and are part# K2080R. If you like to look up your own parts, the best thing to do is order PC244 parts book for the 60. Hope this helps. Also a regular grade 5 5/8 nut will work fine.

Nathaniel,
I stand corrected! I do have the PC-244 but must have typed in the wrong part number when using my "jdparts" online account. I see that the K2080R IS still available. I must have that "CRS" disease!
Thanks for correcting me!
