The tranny on my '57 420 S makes a growling noise in 1st and reverse gear only; 2nd thru 5th are normal. This tractor doesn't have live PTO. I have flushed tranny and filled with new 80/90 GL5 gear oil. I have had the shifter off and can't see any visible damage looking in from the top. Does anyone have any ideas before I remove the tranny and look for the cause of noise?

Thanks in advance,

I have a 420 W slant steer with a 5 speed and continuios PTO with a very noisy 2nd gear. I had it apart but didn,t think gears looked to bad, I am thinking I need to replace 2nd gear, I think its the one that is built into the transmission shaft. Also the pto does'nt work now, Dad hit something with the brush mower. Any thoughts?

Mark, I completed a total repair on a 430U and a 430W both with 5 speeds and continuous PTOs where the 1st gear was very noisy under load. Gears were very good but needle bearings were worn. Replaced all transmission bearings and seals and have eliminated the growling noise totally. Not an easy job if you do not have proper tools, gauges/dials etc.

Mark, it is possible the needle bearings are shot inside the first speed cluster gear, there are 2 sets in there. With the shift cover off, use your hand or screwdriver to see if there is any wobble in the first speed cluster gear, if so, the bearings will need replacing. Sometimes these will be worn so bad that the gear will hit the output pinion shaft. But if it is just normal gear wear, you will not stop the noise, without replacing the gears. New ones are very expensive, even if available and used ones could be in the same condition as yours. I have had those things apart and replaced EVERY bearing, and still have gear noise. 140 weight gear oil will help some.
