Been reading the posts below on the alt. conversions. I recently bought a 420 with a Delco alt. already on it, but not hooked up. It has the plug like this [--] so I had the correct plug for the terminals and just hooked the short wire back up to the Bat. on the alt. I was expecting to later wire the small wire to (excite) the alt. but happened to notice that when giving the tractor full throttle she went to charging, therefore no need for the (excite) wire. I know the one wire alts. work this way, but did not realize the 3-wire would. What do I have here?

The "one-wire" regulator looks EXACTLY like the three-wire regulator. They BOTH have the two flat terminals like this -- . Sounds like you already have the one-wire regulator. The terminals are included to hook up a "idiot" light or it can be hooked up like the normal regulator so it will start charging without reving up the engine. I know, I have purchased and installed the one-wire regulators in both 12volt and 6 volt versions.

Hi Wayne, Some of the alternator shops have the ready made terminal that does what our conversion posts below do in a factory looking set up. Kenneths Classif Generator there in Texas has them I believe. Good Luck, Ol John T

Wayne, most of the later 10-SI's will do that as they have a by-pass resistor hooked to the regulator to help the initial excitation. It will work like that but can eventually burn the regulator out. If you want to stay with that configuration you should really buy a single wire conversion regulator [most auto parts stores have, or can get them]....
