JDH fan shaft.

Still working on getting a pulley on the fan shaft to drive a generator. Can't get the fan off. My directions say to "force fan and drive discs into the front bearing housing and remove split cone locks and keeper from front of shaft". This is from a JD shop manual. I haven't had any success. Should I take it to a shop with a hydraulic press or am I just missing something. The center of the fan appears as hard rubber which is intact. I also have a JDB and it has a spring arrangement where as the H does not. So even when I get the fan off I still have the pulley problem. Any advice or information will certainly be appreciated. Get 2 1" ratchet tie down straps & put one hook on each strap in fanshaft mounting holes on pinion gear end & the other hook on end of straps around fan blades close to hub of fan & ratchet down the straps to put tension on the spring in shaft housing & that should back the fan off of the taper lock keepers. lite tapping w/ a soft faced hammer on fan hub may be needed to get it started. the straps will also help alot upon reassembly.

Isn't there a split pulley available for clamping on the fan shaft so that it that can be installed without taking the fan off?

Leon, yes there is. But as far as I know it's only for the exposed fan shafts like the "D". The ones just behind the fan are spline driven from the fan shaft & must be slid on before the fan goes on.

Joe, What shop manual are you useing for your H. I have a 1941 H that I'm getting ready to restore and have the I&T manual and it sure leaves a lot to be desired. I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks Bob

Joe, on your rubber hub "H" fan, the spring is inside the front bearing housing. Your manual basically tells you what you have to do. You have to depress the fan [& hub] to the rear enough to remove the 2 tapered locks [like big valve keepers]. The problem is, those fan hubs are usually rusted to the shaft & it's easy to ruin the fan hub when pushing & pulling on it. Because of the rubber you can't use heat so that leaves penetrating oil & tapping with a hammer, then using a press.
~You should use an arbor press to depress that fan hub but if the center is rusted tight you have to be careful not to press on the outer hub & should try to press on the center of the hub [the problem is that is where the keepers are].
~Years ago before I had an arbor press in my shop I used a long [6'] bar with one end stuck loosely in my big bench vise [under the closed jaws], then stood the fan shaft on end on a piece of wood in front of the vise & used a socket on the fan hub center [under that bar] to depress it. The fan usually sticks down once depressed so that allows the keepers to be removed, then with some tapping & oil, & patience, the fan can be worked off the shaft.
~There is only a short distance between the rear of that rubber hub fan & front of the fan tube so even when it's off you might have a problem getting a pulley in there. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly there is a short tube between the front of the front fan bearing & the back of the fan hub.....
