Run it with the valve cover off and the leak maybe visible. I'm betting on a failed injector. It can't hurt to change them out for N35's anyways.. You'll need the DD tool for setting the lash. A cracked head will do it too. Any overheating or freezing incidents recently?

I SEE NOTHING LEAKING UNDER VALVE COVER. MACHINE SEEMS TO RUN GOOD ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES STARTS ON ONE CYLINDER. NO OIL IN COOLANT OR COOLANT IN OIL, WOULD IT RUN WELL WITH FAILED INJECTOR? HOW DO I CHECK FOR CRACKED HEAD? HAVE BEEN SUSPECTING EITHER OF THESE PROBLEMS THANKS FOR YOUR HELP TOM D.

From what you said about it runnig on one cylinder somtimes. I dont know about your climate, but it is normal for a diesel, especially a Detroit to run a little rough when it is cold outside. If your climate is warm, and YOU HAVE NO LEAKS ON YOUR RACK then an injector very well could be dumping. Its opening pressure is too low, so it does not get the proper pressure to mist the fuel but rather drips it. If this was the case the engine would act its worst at idle, as the plunger in the injector would be moving slowly making only minimal pressure, and the blower would not be forcing air at its optimum pressure or volume rendering the engine unable to burn all of the fuel. It would for lack of words flood itself out. The fuel would leak past the rings into the crankcase. If this is the case it is very bad for your engine. It washes your pistons and liners of lubricant rendering their life much, much shorter. Any local diesel parts suplier could check them. If they are bad new N series injectors (35, 40, 45 injectors will all be fine) are not all that expensive especially for just two. I hope you can get out cheap, and the best of luck

Can't recomend injectors large rthan 35's ina 440 crawler. The final drives are iffy at stock HP levels and heavy usage. The Deere issue 2-53's with little S35's had no oil cooler or piston cooling spray from the rods.40 or larger injectors can scuff the pistons/sleeves.
