At Mills Fleet Farm I found plasti-kote Rust Not Rust Converter. Stops rust on contact and changes it to iron hard paintable surface. It didn't have the ingredients but should work. Find out when I do it in a week or 2. 16oz. bottle for eight bucks worth trying!

Ty:

Plasti-Kote "Rust Not" is Phosphoric Acid in a jellied base. It will work fine, but I prefer the liquid type, and I apply it with a spray gun if I need to cover a large area. But if used in aersol, you need to wear a protective mask and eye guarding.

The last I bought I got at the local Home Depot in the area near the paint strippers and prep items.

Gentlemen, is this product similar to the properties that POR-15 has?

DAn:

I have not used the POR product. Can't say for sure, but if it reacts with red rust to forom black oxide, it probably has some Phosphoric Acid in it. Other Phosphoric Acid based products are Naval Jelly, Metal Prep, Ospho, and The Right Stuff Rust Remover.

What about Coke and Pepsi?? Read the labels. Food grade phos, no less. Has anybody ever tried them? Perhaps the sugar residue would interfere with paint adhesion. Just a thought. (This is NOT to suggest that other phos acid products are drinkable.)

Zane:

I know Coke and Pepsi have small amounts of Phosphoric Acid, but really very little. Mountain Dew uses Citric instead. The majority of the acidity comes from the CO2 in the aqueous solution. If you check the pH of Coke and then let it go flat, the pH will rise (toward neutral) dramatically.

Same thing happens with Club Soda which is only CO2 and water.
