Am restoring a 520 JD. The gas tank is pretty dirty with crud and rust. What problems will I get into if I try taking the sending unit out of the tank ? Is it easy to damage them and will there be a leak problem later ? Thanks Rich.

per the previous post, be careful on the removal and not damage the stud post or the mechanism. I know parts are hard to come by, exspecially the guage...believe someone has one on auction on ebay...that crud is hard to get rid of. If is white type stuff you may have to have the tank coated inside. Did a 620 that sat for a long time and we could not get rid of the white powdery crude without having the tank coated. Never did exactly know what the stuff was, except some type break down on gasoline over the years...

Rich, I dont have any problem removing them and any leak problems later, the problem is usually the float on the sender is bad and its leaked or rotted etc. Be sure and get a good ground when you reinstall. I think some ground to the tanks metal via them sheet metal screws, but Ive seen others (not sure if original) also use an external connector to obtain a ground. Of course, get a new cork gasket and I use sealer, but be sure if its a brass float its not leaking and if cork, not rotten. Ol John T

Rich:

Yes, you're going to want to remove that sender so that you can clean that tank right.

You shouldn't have any trouble removing the sending unit. There are 5 #8 sheet metal screws and a terminal wire, and underneath is a cork gasket that might be stuck fast. You'll have to replace that for sure. Then just lift it free, being careful not to dent or lose the float in the tank.
