Another question about mixing A's

Has anyone ever put late model styled A engine parts into an early model styled A? Particularly the crank, pistons, rods, block and head. I understand the the late model has 1/4" more stroke, so more cu. in. which result in the higher horsepower rating. I have both a '47 1/2 model and a early '40 model. I really like the early model, but need engine parts from the newer tractor. Plus I like the higher horsepower rating of the newer A, if I decide to pull this tractor.
Thanks for any info.

Only place I've heard that later A had a longer stroke was in this group. My IT manual lists ALL A's with 6 3/4" stroke. Make sure about this to start with would be my advice - and let us know for sure which way it really is. I do know for sure that there is a difference in head gaskets, the later ones being about an inch shorter than the one needed in my 43 A.

later As have a 6-3/4 stroke, early As have a 6-1/2 stroke. the late cranks will fit and look right up till they changed starter locations.

Do you have a serial number break down on when they switched cranks? Can you explain wrong data in the IT manual? Over in the pullers section somebody suggests all A's have the same crank...

You will have to back up what you say.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant was that they could be used interchangably and it was a bolt in swap. I guess I should have been more clear.

Never mind Cole, I can explain the IT manual descrepancy, the manual only goes back to serial number 499000 which is later that the claimed crank switch. I suspected as much but needed more than just hearsay to go on, thanks.

In my previous post I was thinking of switching the crank only. I'm sure the late block (47&later),at least is quite a bit different, don't know about the head or other parts. The 6 3/4 stroke started at 488000, which would be the start of the 1940 production. The 40s were the only year with a long stroke engine that still had a four speed trans.

The blocks will NOT interchange. Go out and look at the block to case bolt pattern. They are not the same. On styled A's, the 40 to 46 year models used one pattern, the 47 to 49 year models had another, and the 50 to 52 year models plus the model 60 used another pattern. That is why TSC made three power blocks for the model A.

The cranks for styled A's 488000 and up are the same stroke. Putting a styled A crank in a unstyled A will gain you the stroke.

The unstyled A flat head will not fit a styled block. But here is a trick. A unstyled A block will bolt to a 40 to 46 A crank case thus allowing the use of the unstyled flat head. It becomes a plumbing issue after that.

A parts book or the parts CD will answer many questions. Pay attention to the gaskets. They will ususally tell you if a bolt pattern has changed. Next time, post your serial numbers with your questions.

As long as you use the block, pistons, and head out of the new tractor you'll be OK. The problem would come when you try to mix these parts, the pistons are different from a styled to the "cyclones" or late A's, as well as the heads. You could run the early "flat" head on the late engine with a change of head studs. I've never done this but would like to try it on my 51' to see what it would do. The stroke in the crank is only from the unstyled to styled so those will be the same in both of yours as well as the rods.

I've never done this, but plan to try it on a 38A in the future. Just off the top of my head I can't see any reason it wouldn't work as long as there is no ridge in the cylinders. If you go ahead, keep us posted.
