Whats the correct fluid for the power steering? It says on top of the fill cap to use type A ATF. I asked at auto parts today and the two kids there had never heard of type A. My guess is that it's Dexron but I could be wrong. I just bought this tractor this winter, and today was about the first day it was warm enoughto work out in the shed. I would also like to know if anyone has put an alternator on a 430 with power steering. It looks to me like there is not hardly enough room. Thanks for the information.

DLM, I restored my 430W last year with power steering. I used John Deere ps fluid in mine and it works great. Operates smoothly and no leaks. Of course I put on all new hoses while I had things apart. Didn't look like much fun trying to replace something after it was assembled.

I'm interested in buying your old generator if
you take it off.

I'll keep the generator just in case I ever want to put it back to original. Thanks for the offer.

I just put PS on my 430W from a donor tractor and I couldn't find Type A fluid at first either. Looking at what was on the parts house shelf I finally started reading the back labels and one of them said it was the same as Type A, they just call it something else now. I can't remember which kind it was but I think it was the Dexron. The tractor I put the PS on and the one it came off of both had an alternator and it fit right in there. Mine was already converted when I got it. The power steering really makes it a handy little tractor.

Thanks for the information. It seemes to me that the type A fluid was for the GM vehicles years ago. Can you give me a little more information on how that alternator was mounted? Does your have the small delco? I've found that if your going to be using a tractor very much there seems to be less starting and battery problems if you go to the alternators. Thanks again.

Yea, I think your right that it was a GM fluid. The mounting of the alternator is pretty straight forward (see pic of the donor tractor) the only trick is to use spacers on the lower mounting bolt to get the pulleys to line up. Also, use as long a belt as reasonably possible so that the alt. with lowers down and lets the belt clear under the hood. On my other tractor, I made some nice looking spacers and mounts, I'll try to get a pic of that one also. Both of my 430's have the one wire Delco (it's unplugged in the pic). The 12 volt works fine but I've got some old 6 volt tractors I've had for almost 20 years and they start just as good.

It's nice to know that there is room for one to be mounted. The picture confirms that it is tight. I would be interested in seeing the bracket you used on the bottom of the alternator. I have a plan for one in my head but it would be nice to see one that actually works without having to experiment to many times.
