just brought home this G seemed to be ok until draining the oil it had a pretty good share of water I drained it and remove crankcase cover and really did'nt look that bad. there was what looked like a small thrust washer and a small horseshoe looking bracket that has three holes in it. at the bottom of the crankcase. the distributor does have quite a bit of play. could I have govenor probloms. or perhaps the pieces are left overs from an earlier repair! if I take off the gov housing is it tough to reset the clearnce.thanks

Gary, those parts don't ring a bell. Can you give us a size & thickness on the thrust washer & a better description of the horseshoe looking bracket? If a thrust washer fell off the governor that thrust washer would have to be broken in pieces or the governor shaft would have to have been removed & put back in. Over the years I have found all kinds of loose parts in the crankcases of old Deere's, most seem to come from the bottom of old oil containers that were used by farmers to add oil to the engine.
~What brand of distributor are you working with? What direction is the play & is it the play in the whole distributor shaft or just the points cam shaft from the weights out?
~On removing the governor; if you save all the fan tube to governor gaskets & all L/H side cover gaskets & either reinstall them or match the thickness with new ones you won't change any clearances. You will have to re-time the distributor drive coupling on the governor to the crankshaft but that is easy. Just turn the crankshaft until the L/H impulse mark on the flywheel lines up with the case mark [at 3 o'clock behind flywheel] then install the governor so the distributor drive flange has the slots running fore/aft [parallel with the ground]..

the play is not side to side. it seems like quite a bit in the advance. you know when you grab the shaft to check how much advance there is just seems like a little much! thanks also is there a parts page on the web to see if I can identify the pieces. yes the washer I saw was in about 3 pieces and the horseshoe looking retainer was made of mild stamped steel about 3/32 thick.and measures about 3x4 it was bent over and broke into!

Gary you had better lift the Gov. housing and fanshaft off the tractor and make sure the locking plate is there if not remove bolts and wipe out holes with solvent get a new locking plate and loctite the bolts when you go back with them,I've tore down a lot of "G"S and 90% of the time the bolts are loose even with the locking plate ears bent over this will save you alot of grief Later Gman

Gary, check your E-Mail for some parts breakdowns.
~On the distributor; it depends on the distributor you have. Rotational play doesn't mean too much, in & out play within reason isn't a real big factor either. Anything over "just slight" on the lateral play should be addressed...

The horseshoe bracket you're describing sounds like the camshaft bolt lockplate that is positioned under the bolts that retain the cam gear to the camshaft. It has three holes (for 3/8" bolts) and is fairly thin, and if it's broken in pieces, it could have fallen off. It should be a full circle. I'd pull the crankcase cover off and reach in and make sure the cam bolts are all in place and tight. You don't want that thing coming apart on you. That plate looks to have been used in all "G"s, so that's the most likely culprit.

WELL i SAY HORSESHOE IT DID NOT LOOK AS IF EVER A COMPLETE CIRCLE. AND YES I DID TAKE OFF THE CC COVER. THE CAMBOLTS LOOKED TO BE ALL IN PLACE. THERE WAS METAL IN THE BOTTOM.

ONE OF THE TWO FLY WEIGHTS ON THE GOVERNOR IS MISSING. I TOOK OFF THE SIDE COVER THE WEIGHT PART WAS KNOCKED OFF WHEN IT FELL. HOPEFULLY IT DID'NT BREAK ANY TEETH ANYWHERE. ALSO THE DISTRIBUTOR DRIVE THAT IS BOLTED ON THE SHAFT WITH THE LITTLE HALF MOON KEY CAME OFF! QUESTION NOW WHERE TO GET MY PARTS I GUESS REALLY JUST NEED IS A PIN AND ANOTHER FLY WEIGHT!
