In an earlier post about an unrelated problem, someone tapped an interesting topic: How much oil consumption in an 8-10 hour period is considered acceptable? I know on my 720 Diesel, just tinkering around it can easily use a quart in 8 hours, but put a load on it and it seems to go a little easier on the oil. So, let's hear it. How much are these old two bangers supposed to use?

I'll take a stab at this. A simple answer is: NONE! A quart of oil in 8 hours would not be acceptable to a farmer. However, one has to consider some questions:

1.) Is it smoking badly over and above the normal diesel smoke?
2.) Is it running poorly because of the oil usage?
3.) What does a few quarts of oil cost vs a complete overhaul that may require a rebore and new pistons?

Owners choice.

When servicing, "fill the oil and check the fuel tank".
