I have several John Deere A's , one of which is a 45 long hood with the exposed electric start flywheel. Recently I got bought a 44 A that was a hand start, later converted to electric start. My question is--- Why do the flywheels on these two tractors look different, did John Deere make a diff. flywheel for the elec. updates. thanks in advance

John Deere "A" Flywheels -- Styled
Four different flywheels are shown in the scriptures.

A29R up to serial number 487999. Part # AA264R
A2449R from serial number 488000 to 583999.Part # AA2280R.
A2237R or A2615R (With ring)from 477000 to 583999
Part Number AA2367R.
A3264R (with ring) for Serial Number 5840000 and later. Part number AA4240R.

As you can see, there are some overlaps and two different flywheel castings used under the same part number.

Mornin Larry, The only parts book I have on hand is for unstyled B's, and I don't have any model A parts books or specs or know what flywheels were used on what models or modifications for electric starts. As long as the flywheel had that machined smooth surface so the starter ring teeth could be heated and swedged on, that could have been done anytime or added, but most the older pure hand start A's Ive seen dont have that machined surface like the later electric start models. Long ago (1973 I think) I had an A (my first JD) with the older top mount electric start and if I recall, its flywheel teeth werent over on the edge mounted like later A's (more like toward the middle, not the dead inside edge), but its just been tooooo ooo long to recall. Im sure some posters here have parts books or specs on that flywheel, sorry but I just dont.

Best Wishes n God Bless the USA Ol John T
