Interchangeability of parts on JDA

I am new to JD's but own a couple of Fords. I have located two JD A's. I believe one is a '46 model and the other is an early 40's model. The '46 has a cushion seat and pressed frame, the older one has a pan seat and is an all-fuel (has two tanks). Both tractors are in poor condition, both stuck, sheet metal is shot, tires shot. The '46 is supposed to have run a couple of years ago. I am really interested in the older model. Is there info somewhere as to the interchangeability of the parts on JD's? I am mainly interested in engine and transmission parts, can they be swapped? Any info is appreciated.
Thanks

JR,
By the way, the all-fuel and gas manifolds will swap just fine if they both fall in the correct S/N break(eg. 39's have a 4-bolt exh. pipe flange), but as John T said from much wisdom, the bolts usually break!

I have run a '46 A (all fuel equipped) on gasoline for many years w/o problems. (would be the same as running a 60,620,630 ect on the heat exchanging mode) It will probably not dyno as much as the "gas" or "cold" manifold that is still on the shelf, but it has trophied in 2 of the 3 pulls it has been in.

Later, Pat

JR,
Just to warn you a head of time, the tractor with a pressed frame and cushion seat is most likely NOT a '46, as that didn't begin until sometime in 47(mid-year). While the dates so far have been off, make sure the earlier one is not a '39 stlyed A, the main case and trans is different than any other styled A's (they also have 12 spline axles compared to 15 of the other styled A's)

As for parts interchangability from a 488000-583999 SN tractor (1940ish to mid 1947 range) with the parts from a 584000 plus tractor (pressed steel frame), there were MANY changes (block, head, crank, manifold, pistons, flywheel, main case, rear axle housing, brake assys. ect... just to name a few things off the top of my head) However, some of the other items will physically fit, so if the price of the later tractor is low enough, maybe it will serve to come in handy for a handful of small parts.

I hope some of this will help, If you have any other questions, E-mail me! Later, Pat

I think you want parts book PC 675 which, I believe covers all the styled A models from s/n 477,000 to 703,384.

Good Mornin there JR, To begin with, yes, there are thousands of parts, and some will be interchangeable on those 2 tractors. An easy cheap way to get started on your question is to purchase a Parts Book from a John Deere dealer which will allow you to look up individual parts versus the 2 tractors Serial Numbers. If ones an all fuel and the other a gas only, those manifolds are different however. We will try n help you the best we can on here, but in the condition you described, you got a lot of work and money ahead of you, but I for one beleive the history and heriatge we are preserving for future generations makes it a worthwhile and honorable endeavor.

Good Luck to Ya and God Bless

Ol John T Nordhoff

Thanks for the info. Can the manifold for the gas engine be bolted up to the all-fuel head? What I would like to end up with is the early 40's model A running just on gas. I would use a gas hood and tank. Also, is the parts books from Deere just for a particular model?

I believe the parts book you need will begin with and cover most of the "Styled" John Deere Model A Tractors, from around 1939/1940 through 1952, but not sure, see what JD has. There may a break between early and late model Styled unit books????? I think the manifold will interchange, but dont have an A Parts Book to answer for sure. Usually, those manifolds dont just "easily" unbolt and come off, they are usually corroded to the studs and they or the nuts tend to twist off. The all fuel or gas carb should interchange easily, and either, of course, will be fine using just gas. Im sure some posters on the board have an A parts book though. The parts book will answer most of these type questions, and they dont cost all that much.

Hang in there n Good Luck John T
