Would appreciate some help on trouble shooting the hydraulics [JD called it a Touch-O-Matic] on a MT...no matter what position either of the two control knobs are moved, the lift arms do not respond.

Have changed the hydraulic fluids per operations manual, no help. The last owner did not use the hydraulics (2-3yrs), no info. before that...the PTO seems to work fine.

Any help on an approach or solution would be greatly welcomed.

Thank you very much,
tom

Thanks Clooney. That gives me enough to get my feet wet. Is the testing information you alluded to in the IT shop manual?

As far as the novel part, with my experience level, that novel would have to be written with easy explanations and many pictorials. LOL I had to laugh when you said that because I know I ask some pretty basic questions...

Thanks again,
tom

Tom, you could have a number of different problems causing that T-O-M not to work. Anything from a bad pump, to a stuck valve, to an air lock, to a pin hole leak in the return line, to a linkage problem inside the T-O-M housing.
~I guess my first suggestion would be to pull the return line at the pump then use a hand pump oil can & fill the pump with oil. In a lot of those [fail to work] cases on the M & MT I have seen the pump be air locked & not able to prime itself.
~If that doesn't get it working you will need to install a pressure gage on the rear T-O-M unit & do a pressure test. While that T-O-M isn't rocket science it is a complex system & you will probably need a service manual to properly diagnose the T-O-M. The manual will cover troubleshooting & special tests to check system operation. ~We will be happy to answer any questions here but it would take writing a novel to talk you through the complete trouble shooting of that dual T-O-M system....

Tom, There are three components that make the system work: The pump, the T-O-M unit, and the lines connecting the two. Start by finding out which of the three is the problem. If you don't have a high pressure gage as Clooney suggested, loosen the pressure line (small one) at the lift unit, then start up the engine, you should have a strong squirt of oil coming out. If not, then likely the pump needs rebuilding or the return line (big one) is sucking air. If you have good pressure here, then it is something in the unit itself. Sometimes it is eaiser to just pull the unit, clean it good, replace all the seals, piston rings, head seals ect. and have it over with. Those systems accumulate a lot of crud over the years (no filter) and usually a good dissasembly and cleaning will put them back working. All the rebuild parts are available from Deere and cost around $150 for everything. But you will need the service and parts manual, if you are not familiar with this system.
