Did the JD "A"s or "G"'s have a foot clutch?
Were all the pre 1952 JD's mostly hand clutch tractors? I like the big ole "G"'s but don't like hand clutches. Thanks for you guys feedback..... .

Wayne, what you said in your note was 100% correct. However it might have left the impression that the L, LA, LI and even the "62" were Dubuque's. Weren't they made in Moline? That was before JD had a Dubuque works.

Mornin tractordude, No, the JD A's and G's you asked about were hand clutch models. I once drove a Case hand cluth tractor also in my misguided youth, maybe even a Twin City MM if I recall. Other vendors also produced hand clutches in early tractors. One advantage was that to repair the clutches, you didnt have to split the tractor in two as on most regular placed clutch tractors and, of course, the engines have that crossways crankshaft as opposed to the straight back in many other tractors of that vintage. When trying to back a wagon sometimes or back up a haybine to pull the tongue trip rope to slide the tongue over, I sure agrre a foot clutch would be handier in those situations lol.

Take care n God Bless Ol John T Nordhoff

Tractor dude. Do not short change a hand clutch-- if you need to, (put your ol right foot again the clutch)--with a little practice you can make it work real easy. I'm not saying a foot clutch isn't better, just that you can get by.Dave
