4430 water pump

Noticed today that water pump on my 1977 4430 has a minor leak {not enough to see the drip } what is involved in changing the water pump. All sincere help appreciated.

Ken, providing the bearing isn't completely out (it doesn't sound like it is), it will be cheaper to rebuild your pump than replace it, and a rebuild will make it as good as new. I don't think a kit is available for the 4430 pump (or maybe the 4630), but your dealer can piece it out for you. You'll need the bearing, seal, gaskets and a new impeller. They can also provide you with instructions on rebuilding it - they may come with the new seal. If you have access to a small press, they're not hard to rebuild. An air hammer also makes removing the impeller easier, as rattling on the shaft with it will vibrate the impeller right off. Just make sure to measure the distance the pulley is from the housing prior to disassembly, as you'll want to reinstall it to the same dimension to keep your belts running true. It sounds involved but it's really not, and you can probably rebuild your old pump for 1/3 the cost of installing a rebuilt or new unit. Email me if I can be of any more help.
