I have a 3020 that is leaking water out of the weep hole. If I loosen the cap it does not leak. Also this tractor has just been overhauled. It did not leak the first 50 hours but has since. How do I fix it and what should I look for.

You fix it by removing the cylinder head, oil pan, pistons and liners and replacing the o-rings at the bottom of the liner bores. Coming 50 hours after an overhaul I would say that the repairman either didn't clean the o-ring bores thoroughly or cut an o-ring in the process of installing the liners. It can happen to anyone, but if you've done several, you can usually tell by feel if you've cut an o-ring. If you have any doubt at all, you pull the liner and double-check it. Using plenty of JD Liner O-ring Soap will help a bunch, and Murphy's Oil Soap works just as well. It quits leaking when you remove the cap because you're releasing the pressure in the cooling system, which is what is forcing the coolant past the damaged o-ring.

I have seen some old 3020's that the cavitation was pretty bad on the block, You can't support the oring enough to seal it, it probaly didn't leak before the overhaul because sediment sealed it. I have used port epoxy to repair the oring grooves. It is usually #3 and #4 cylinders right behind the starter. Or as the other guy says may have cut the packing when putting it together, if you do enough bound to get one sometime.

I've seen some liner bores that weren't the greatest, but none that were really bad - at least not on Deeres. Usually the damage seems to be from bad cooling system maintenance and sediment sitting on the block surface. I rebuilt a lot of Cat 3304/3306 engines that I had to epoxy the liner bores in. They can be a little challenging to get right, as the o-rings are on the liners, and you have to get the "ramps" in the bores smoothed up real well for the liners to go in right. I should knock on wood, as I imagine I've probaly installed somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 or so liners in various engines and I haven't cut an o-ring yet. Getting everything just right before installation is the key, I think.
