What would make the rotary button and the distributor cap have carbon build up

Good Evening Keith, Well a few things can cause carbon build up inside those darn caps.

1. One thign Ive seen bad is when the vents get plugged and theres more ozone and then moisture builds up and the high voltage arc starts jumping in places not intended. Eventaully then, carbon tracks show up and can cause the spark to never reach the wire terminal as intended. Also, be sure the gasket is in good shape so excess moisture cant enter or be retained inside the cap in the wrong places, yet the vent is free to let moisture out. Cracks can also cause problems.

2. Other than excess moisture, a dirty or grimy or oily build up inside the cap area can cause excess carbon to develop. Therefore, keep them vented and clean and water free will certainly help.

3. A weak yellow spark is more prone to allow carbon to build up then a hotter blue spark. If the points are pitted or burned or carboned up or overly oxidized, clean or change them. A weak condensor can cause a weaker spark or even a weak coil or a rotor that has lost some of its permanent magnetism over the years.

4. Things outside the cap like too high resistance wires (use solid wire core, not auto carbon supressor wire) or leaky wires can cause propblems. If the plugs are gapped way to wide, although the voltage has to rise higher to jump their gap, the current and heat is less yielding a wimpy faint yellow spark resultign in a greater chance of carbon build up.

5. The condition (clean and carbon free) and location and distance between the rotor tip and the plug terminals on the inside of the cap is imoportant to maintian the correct firing voltage and current. They need to be clean and smooth and not pitted or coated over.

Maintaing the points and condensor and a good magnetized rotor and clean rotor tips and plug terminals and a properly vented clean cap plus good wires will reduce an excess tendency to build up carbon inside the cap area. If she carbons up way too much or too fast, I would agian check the caps venting and condition of all mentioned above.

Keith, internal spark arcing is the usual cause, either due to moisture [is the vent hole open?], or excess resistance in the secondary wiring [do you have solid metal core plug wires that are in good condition?], or a large spark plug gap [is the plug & plug gap correct for your tractor?], or a large rotor to cap gap [is the rotor contact worn & burnt, or cap contacts worn & burnt?], or too much oil & oil vapor in the mag [is there oil in the mag cap area? if so suspect a bad shaft seal or the mag was over oiled], or the rotor isn't maintaining contact with the cap button & it is arcing across the gap, or the cap is just too old & porous & has previous carbon tracking problems that are reoccurring. ~Keep in mind when the mag makes a spark the spark takes the easiest path to ground & if there is excess resistance in a plug wire, or spark plug the spark will take the easiest path, & that isn't always the desired path..... .
