I am thinking of buying a 420S, it is a good tractor, just needs bodywork. He told me that there were very little of them made. Does anyone know how many were made, and what is a good price for it. He is asking $2,700

Also i have a 52 JD A, and a JD 60 w/801 3pt. What I was wondering is can I take the 801 off of my 60 and put on my A w/out having to alter it. Thanks

Hi Blake
That is probably a pretty good price for a hobby tractor which is what has run the price up.
I am looking for a 420/430 to pull small stuff like my rake and manure spreader. I think that the 420S is a nice looking tractor and noticed that a dealer near me had taken one in on trade. Its not the last year slant steer model. It has 7000+ hours on the tach and he wants $5500. I thought that $3500 to $4500 was a more reasonable price based on the market. I will check and see if it has a 5 speed and live pto. I will probably just get my 36 BO running and pull the small stuff with it.

Sounds like a decent price for a running 420S in nice shape no mattter if it's a phase 1, 2, or 3.
Options add to the value, PS, 5 spd, live pto, spin outs, good lights, front weights, rear weights, 3pt top link, tach.

The 801 hitch should bolt right on to your 52 A.

You are dealing with three different years on the 420. So here are the totals for the three years. '56 - 1550 '57 - 1258 '58 - 1100 If you are looking at an all fuel or LP it would be pretty rare. Like Dwayne said, 5 speed and live pto are biggies. Personally, I am not a collector but a user and wouldn't even drive to look at a 4 speed. Also you got to crank her up and use all the gears. They are all mostly advertised as jewels. Good Luck

what you will have to check is if it has the slanted steering wheel. there were quite a few 420S tractors made, but only the last few hundred were slant wheels. check and see if it has a live pto and/or power steering, both of these were rare on a 420. even if it is not a slant wheel, the price sounds pretty good if its a good tractor with a serial number tag.
