Hi Folks,

I have been looking without luck all winter for a 1020 and have decided to broaden my search to other, newer JD models. Can someone please let me know what the equivalent models are for the newer series JDs (ie. late 1970s-80s)? I am looking for a small, low center of gravity, utility style John Deere tractor and have been told that the 1020 would be about perfect.

Thanks,
Eric

what about a 2440..300b 401b and other industrials so are over looked because they are yellow...bought a 401b for 6200 with 1750 hrs on it and has a reverser on it..you can get a 2440 with a reverser when you find it and i think a 1520 came out with reversers..i believe the 2440 is built in the us and i know the industrials are..have nice day may god bless

Eric - you might want to check out the JD mdl 2120, they are German made, and I don't see or read much about them , but, I've owned a little sweetie for about 5 years and she is a work horse! Putting out about 63 hp , small , compact ,two stage clutch with lever to engage and very dependable. Reccommend highly. Just for your consideration... BR

Well, besides the 1020 there were:
John Deere 820 & 830 (3 cyl) utility tractors @31-35hp. The 820 was made 1968-75 and the 830 from 1974-75.

There was the 1520, (1968-73) @ 48hp, the 1530, (1974-75),45hp.

You could try a 2020,(1965-71) @ 54 hp!

The Mannheim built 2040 (1976-82) @ 41hp, or the 2240 (1975-82) @50 hp are also good.

Finally the 1050,1250, and 1450 (Yanmar built) range from 37 hp(1050), to 41 hp(1250), to 51hp(1450). these "50 series" were built 1984-88.

I would still reccomend a 1020. Of all of the other choices I listed, only the 1520 &1530, and the 2020 are US built. The 820/830/2040,&2240 are built in Mannheim Germany, and the others, as mentioned, are Yanmar built Japanese tractors!

Hi. I have a 1520 with a 48 loader and its been great. I have a lot of trees on my property and this tractor has the exhaust that goes down and out the back making it easier to get around. If you're looking for a later model you might look at the 30 series, i.e. 1030, 1530, etc. I think there was even a smaller tractor in that series, the 830 (not to be confused with the 2 cylinder model). I hope this helps.

My brother bought a 1020 a couple of years ago with a loader. I was driving it the other day helping him build fence. He mentioned that he was thinking about selling it, although he is just considering the notion, and I can't say if he is serious about it. I can say it is a sweet little utility and my dad will press him to hang onto it. So just choosing that particular model is a good step and you most likely won't regret having one.
