301A loader cylinders leak

I have a 301-A (1020 industrial) with whatever model loader they put on it at the factory (I never was able to find a model number on the loader). The cylinders are leaking oil. I assume the most likely cause is seals that need replacement, but I don't have a whole lot of experience with hydraulics. Is this repair something that a reasonably handy shade tree mechanic could handle, or does it require special tools/experience?

Dave,
I'm guessing you have a 143, 145, 14x JD loader with either 3 or 4 cylinders (two for the sides and one or two for the bucket).

You're looking at 30 to 50 bucks in O rings / seals per cylinder and maybe a few extra bucks for new circlips, etc. - plus a lot of fluid mess if you go the shade tree route.

If you take them into a shop, I'd guess at least two hours per cylinder at 50 to 100 bucks shop rate per hour plus the parts.

If there're strong cylinders the seals/O rings will do the job. If not, somebody is probably going to try to talk you into honing the cylinders.

Also, consider some cross over points. I've got a 5 to 10 drip per day when in use leak in the bucket cylinder on my 1020. Fluid is 30~40 bucks per 5 gallon pail. Assuming the leak stays constant - it'll take 20 years before the parts for a rebuild become economical. I got a bit of kitty liter for the barn floor a couple of years ago and considered the problem solved. So far, so good.
