Antifreeze or Water During Break-In

During break-in on a 2 cyl. motor is it better to run antifreeze or water? I've heard of people use water in their tractor when the head gasket is leaking. I guess it must not leak as bad with water in it. So is there a preferred one to use, or does it even matter? What do you guys use as a head gasket sealer, Copper Coat? Thanks.

Brandon

If local temperature at the time permits it, I use pure water for break in. If there is a tiny leak somewhere, often with plain water it will rust itself shut with no further attention, whereas with anti-freeze (which has rust inhibitor in it), it will continue to leak. Also, an anti-freeze leak will quickly discolor paint, if that is an issue. Also, if upon running the engine, you discover any problem requiring cooland drainage to repair, the water is disposable!

Verify that everything works, and that you have no leaks, and then put in the anti-freeze.

Copper Coat on the head gasket for my 50 worked well in conjunction with the new gasket. No leaks and with a little squeeze-out, I knew the mating surfaces were sealed.

Just thought of a little humor here. How many new vehicles you bought that came with the spec that it has water in the cooling system just in case someone on the assy line f----- up lol. If you are as old, preoccupied with other projects, etc, as I am - the water may be a good idea.

Brandon,
The good thing about water is that if it does leak into the combustion chamber, it doesn't do a lot of damage. Antifreeze, on the other hand, can make a big mess of those nice new rings and freshly honed cylinder walls. So the better part of valor with a fresh engine is to start on pure water until you're sure you have no leaks - then switch to a 50/50 distilled water / antifreeze combo.

If you're using a copper based head gasket, the Copper Coat is probably a good talisman -- and old Mr. Permatex needs the money.
