I got the JD A 44 hand start to RUN by pulling it with help of my father. but it wont idle, it kind of running at very slow speed, I did some Adiusting to the mag it's fine. guess the idle is't working we pull the idle out still no different. I going take carb apart and look at it. Other thing the Radiator has 2 holes in it so I stuck water hose and let it drip to keep it full when keep engine running to brake in at slow speed. guess going have to take that part!! I guess that idle thing not working as that's why hand start was bit hard to get going is't that right? I did have a good oil press at that slow speed it shows around 18 something. it was REAL fun see that old tractor running as it has not run in 30 years! Pop Pop POp pOp poP pOP PoP PoPPPP!!!

Check the secret passage as they call it nowdays, yes you can over drill it but there is a chance you think you are clear in yet you are feeling rust that is very very hard. Use common sence but I have ran across a few that were cleaned by a expert so called--top dollar carb man, and that was all that was wrong, I always say next time I should measure the secret passage so everyone would be able to relate.

Way to go Steve, yes, a poor idling carb is a subject we have covered on here a lot over the past few years, and I will post the Roberts Carb Repair Web site page which shows the 3 passages located behind the 3 brass drill plugs which may need drilled/cleaned out. Often, heating is required to remove the brass drill plugs, but dont overheat them. I use the extra long aircraft bits No 40 and 53 I bought from Roberts to bore those passages out, but then you also have to use like MIG weldign wire or steel guitar strings to clean all the smaller passages and ports that are smaller than those bits in those 3 passages shown on Roberts Web Site. I initially set my needles to 1 3/4 to 2 turns out on the idle and 3/4 to 1 out on the load needle, then fine tune with her running.

Other poor idle can be caused by vacuum leaks like around the throttle bushings or carb gaskets etc. A spray of like WD40 or Carb Cleaner or an un lit propane torch at those loacationms and around the intake manifold can pin point vacuum leaks.

I once boiled and cleaned and soaked a carb till the cows came home which wouldnt idle and it didnt help, but after I removed the drill plugs and bored out the passages with the 40 and 53 drill bits and used wire etc in the smaller passages and installed new throttle shaft bushings DID IT FINALLY IDLE SMOOTH.

Have you adjusted the stop screw and spring and tried to idle her by hand (unhooking governor linkage) to see if you can get it to idle better that way???? Try tweaking the idle neelde some also at slow idle.

Heres the Roberts Carb Repair Web Page

Steve, yes, a lean or inop. idle circuit in the carb will drastically effect hand starting.
~The initial carb needle settings should be: idle needle = 2 turns out from seated, & the load needle = 1 turn out from seated.
~If your idle needle has no effect on the idling you probably have a plugged idle circuit or rust in an idle channel. You will have to remove the carb & remove the brass passage plugs then run wires through all the passages. Just blowing air & carb clean through the carb passages usually won't be enough to get the carb to work. If the carb is really rusty in the passages you will probably need to run long drill bits through the main passages [not the small holes] see link for drill bit info http://www.robertscarbrepair.com/tip1.htm
~You will probably need to heat those brass passage plugs to just under red/brown then let cool to get them out without damage...
~I sent you a picture with a diagram of all the holes that need cleaning & inspection for proper idle..

Congrats!! They do sound good don't they? They never idle smooth but ,if really set up right you can count the firing strokes.

I would guess carb problems. There are some idle passages in there that get full of rust and crud and need to be cleaned with a very small drill bit. I think it is Roberts Carb that sells a kit along with the right size bits to clean the carb properly.
