51 B that the fly wheel rocks on crank

I have a 51 B that the fly wheel moves in at the top and bottom about .25 inch (rocks on Crank). I took the fly wheel off and it appears some one has punched the crank to stop the movement. The fly wheel holds tight. Would like to eliminate this play. ANY IDEAS? Is the nut on the end to keep the fly wheel from moving? Some type of safe guard?

Marc, you have severe wear on the crank or flywheel splines [or more than likely both]..

~The proper repair is to replace the flywheel & crankshaft..

~You have one of those problems that a person kind of has to look at to suggest a viable repair..

~You have to determine if the crank splines are still serviceable.. If so maybe a replacement flywheel will do the trick...

~If the crank splines are just worn a little you might be able to locate a Taper-Lock flywheel for it [I'm not sure they are available for the "B" though].. You might try 2-cylinder plus [417-589-2634],, or Denglers[1-513-423-4000].

~There are any number of other ways to TRY to repair your problem, from welding the crankshaft & re-cutting the splines, to adding shim stock between the flywheel & crank [that doesn't hold up very good],, to using JB weld [that doesn't hold up for long under load either but will probably hold until you find a real repair] ,, to just welding the flywheel to the crankshaft [that usually holds up for a while but as you can imagine it makes flywheel removal difficult].. I have even seen the flywheel to crankshaft drilled at the joint & hardened pins driven in [that probably has the best chance of holding for a while].

~If the wear isn't extreme you MIGHT be able to use hardened bolts & nuts in the flywheel & just tighten it more [CAUTION: that could also crack the flywheel]..

~That big nut is for flywheel safety retention & to keep it from migrating on the crank.. It also makes end play adjustment easier...

I measured the crank at the fly wheel. It measures 2.17 to 2.20 at the top of the splines. The fly wheel measures 2.24 to 2.25 at the back side of the splines. The fly wheel has hair line cracks about 2 inches from the bolt heads and nuts. The cracks close up on wheel removel. Bolts are worn. I think I am going to try the new bolts. Question! The flywheel has a small amount of metal at the outside edge of the fly wheel where it comes together in the seam. Is this to force the back side of the fly wheel to grab the crank when the bolts are tightend?

Marc, if you install new bolts & tighten them tighter you will probably aggravate those cracks even more & could even completely break the flywheel.. If you have .004"-.008" spline clearance you might look into adding some sort of shims between the flywheel & crank before tightening the bolts [be less apt to further damage the flywheel that way].

hi guys, i know clooney knows an alot about these old tractors but i question welding the crank especially with a mig welder. mig welders get the metal so hot would it become brittle and fly off? don't know but i thought i would ask
