Does anyone know if these types of filters can be cleaned and reused again. Mine is starting to have some "funk" inside it... I am refering to the filter itself, not the oil bath part... thanks.

I was just about to say the 20 series utility tractors never had an oil bath cleaner. But I just looked at my 1020 parts manual and there it is on the early serial numbered machines. Learn something new every day!

JP:

If it is all metal (no paper), and you don't care if any paint gets damaged (if it has paint on it), you can soak it in a bucket of hot water and a cup or two of Lye.

You will be amazed !!! Finish it off with a strong stream of clear water (or even a pressure washer ) and it will be so clean you'll have to oil it so it doesn't rust.

If you need to save the finish, you're limited to diesel fuel and other solvents.

Frank,
The 2020 and and my 1020 have a wire mess affair up inside above the oil bath bowl. Most of the outside part of the air cleaner is still nice and green even 30 some years later, as it's protected from the elements by the hood. Only the oil bath bowl is exposed.

So I'd respectfully submit that the lye cure may be worse than the disease -- who wants to remove all that nice, original paint just to clean, and who wants the very heavy duty Brillo pad thing inside starting to rust... A solvent worked best / easiest for me. If a genuine parts washer isn't handy, some of that spray on engine degreaser might be the best alternative - or even "borrow" your wife's spray bottle of 409 or similar cleaner.

Yeah,

Steve, I offered it as on option. For anyone who might want to apply new paint, it really cleans well. As I said, if you want to save the paint, then you are limited to solvents.

JP,
Sure, find a parts washer - the kind with a tub that sits on a tank and has a pump driven flexible nozzle on top to spray some kind of Diesel fuel solvent will do a good job in removing that "funk".
