There is a High Clearance 1953 50W for sale in the YTMag Photo ads section and the seller is making quite a big deal out of the fact that there were only 133 50W's made. While technically correct the statement is quite misleading and potential buyers need to be informed that while JD only maintained records of the building of 133 50W's, it was because they were only registered as such in 1953. When JD made the decision to go to the convertable wide front end they changed their record keeping and no longer registered which 50's had all of the required attributes to be called a 50W. In fact the 50W designation disappeared at this change.

So to say that only 133 50W's were made, additional information should be added that only 133 50W's were made in 1953 and the only year that JD called this specific configuration a 50W. Many more 50's configured exactly like those 50W's in 1953 were made in the remaining production years of the 50 production but they just were not recorded as 50W's.

To compare this for example to HWH production would also be foolish as the only HWH's produced and configured as such by JD were recorded as such by JD.

Yes, 133 1953 50W's were made but to not tell the rest of the story to a potential buyer is misleading in my opinion.

Witout getting into the merits of the rest of the discussion, I think a distinction needs to be made here. There is RARE, and there is DESIRABLE. Desirable will outsell rare any day of the week. Granted that most of the desirable tractors are rare or somewhat rare, scarcity does not necessarily mean it will bring a big price.
The HWH, 330, 320, etc is a perfect example, if you have a 50 that is one of a few, it will not likely ever bring what an HWH will, regardless of how it is advertised. Just my two cents.

Lavoy,

You make an excellent point! I agree at this point in time the 50-W does not fall into the "desirable" category. Yes, it is "rare", but doesn't command the respect that many of the more "desirable" and even less "rare" tractors do. Maybe I am on a mission to prevent the 50-W from being the Rodney Dangerfield of rare tractors. Again, I appreciate your rational response to the issue being discussed here.

I am not amused by seeing these high priced tractors being relisted time after time. Some people think a tractor is rare and valuable but they wouldn't give half what they are asking for it if someone else had the tractor for sale. I have a friend that listed a tractor for a reasonable price recently and sold it within 6 hours. It seems strange that a late model John Deere B sold so quickly and a "rare" 50W hasn't sold yet. This is just my $.02.

Gentlemen,
Our 2 cents. We have seen alot of changes take
place in this hobby. It seems to be more
emphasis on productions#'s than "enjoyment" of
what we are fortunate to have. It seems if you
don't own a low production#, early serial#,
brass tag, round-spoked wheel tractor, etc. you
don't stand out in this hobby. It is a shame. We wish we could go back to the earlier days of collecting when we got together for a pizza party, and enjoyed ourselves. Don't blame Dennis. He is no different than any other collector/seller trying to sell his tractor. We believe that 98% of collector's are honest,
and not out to mislead or misrepresent in anyway.
Let's move onto the future, enjoy the hobby,
and get-along with each other. Opinions are
opinions. We all have them. Doesn't mean
we all share the same one. That is what makes
the world go round. Take care!

Amen to Dean and Will, This RARE tractor that Dennis keeps offering must not be a valuable as he believes!! You are not the only one to be tired of this 50W every other week! I offered him $2500 for it as I saw another one on here for that price and he said no! Funny thing is, I haven't seen that other 50W advertised again! Folks buy tractors at a reasonable price not at what people think they are worth just because they have one!

Mike,

I think the tractor that you said had not been relisted can be found in the current YT Photo Ads (I'll help you with the ad # if you can't find it). You are in luck, it is still for sale and the price is only $2500.00. Of course the engine is stuck, the carburetor is missing (good luck replacing that for less than $250.00), the front wheels don't match, it is missing some lights, it is missing the exhaust pipe, and, yes, you get to pay the shipping cost from California to wherever you are. Since it doesn't run you'll just have to assume the transmission and PTO are just fine, right? So, do you really think that your offer of $2500.00 for my 50W was reasonable? By the way, that was a rhetorical question.

Thanks Dean for your detailed explanation of the fact (yes, I did say fact) that only 133 50W's were built. Yes, you can buy John Deere Model 50's that are configured like a 50W, but they are not 50W's. Dean and I spent considerable time recently discussing this issue and we had a definite difference of opinion over whether or not it is misleading to say that only 133 50W's were built. The personnel at the John Deere Archives obviously would disagree with Dean since they are the ones that made this fact known in the first place. Two-Cylinder magazine presented this same fact in their Nov-Dec 1990 issue and again in their Jan-Feb 2000 issue. Therefore, I'm not the least bit hesitant to stand by my assertion that there were only 133 50W's built. And, since there were only 126 HWH's built, I think it is very fair to compare those production numbers.

Reguardless of you two fellas discussion of what JD made I think the real problem lies in the ad being repeadly renewed. To Dennis If it hasnt sold at this price yet then it is not going to so why dont you lower your price before relisting or find other means of advertising. The funny thing is that I put a tractor for sale (reaonably priced) on this site, and had at least 25 e-mails, and sold the tractor before the day was over. People are seeing your ad they just dont want it at that price (get a hint). Just because this advertising is free doesnt give you the right to abuse it by placing your ad every week. None of my buisness, but if the 50 is so rare maybe you should keep it for yourself. These old tractors seem to be ever increasing in value.

Will,

First of all, mine is not the only repeat ad and you haven't seen it in several weeks. Second, this site is only free for those persons that do not voluntarily contribute. Third, you are correct, it is none of your business whether I sell the 50W or not. Personally, I think people are asking (and paying) too much for High-Crop tractors, 320's, 330's, etc., but I don't e-mail them my advice. I also don't make a habit of telling people what they should and should not advertise for sale. You have a great day.

Dennis, As for your statement about people e-mailing you their opinions; I didnt email you anything if that is what you are implying. This was posted on a public discussion board for public discussion. I kept my discussion within the rules of this forum so I have done noting wrong as far as that is concerned. I have sevral times wanted to email you an tell you my feelings, but I kept my comments to myself, as I knew it was not the time or place to voice my opinions. This is the time and place to do so. Second of all it is my business as it is on this site and genral information to the public. If you didnt want a spectacle to be made of yourself you should never have argued with the original post. Possibly you are a subscriber to this site, and if so you have every right to place your ad. I just told you how I felt and you didnt like it, as it stepped on your toes. Just like we dont like the preacher at church anymore when he steps on our toes. To sum it all up I have nothing morally or ethically wrong. I will have a nice day hope you dont take this to heart and ruin yours. have a good one William

Do not acuse will for emailing you.I did. I will speak to Deans original message since you seem to have your undies in a bundle! Your tractor is not as rare as you think, 50W long axle was made for a number of years. Check out the auction from pioneer power last year, a long axle wide front A and B sold for less than 4000 each. You are one of the guys that over value tractors on small facts. As to your email reply about most veiwers of YT mag not wanting your tractor and your niche buyer idea, why dont you place a larger ad in the two cylinder magazine and if most of us are beneath you, well you are wrong. You are right in saying that I did not want the tractor in California, but not because of the price, shipping was the factor!!!!! !!!!!

Mike,

Get your facts straight. The last 50-W built was #5014610. That was the 133rd and last 50-W built. Long axle A's and B's number in the thousands, not a good comparison. Let's try to deal in facts and not your opinions.
