Please excuse what may be a dumb question, but I have a new seat back for my 51 B. On the seat frame is a thin metal piece that spans the seat back. It is bolted to a welded support. How is the back atttached to this piece? Was it riveted? How do you attach a new back to this? And is it proper for a John Deere decal to go on this metal piece. Thanks, Bill

If you are looking for a metal seat back that will work with the newer back cushion then Sharp's in Missouri is making one. I just got one and it looks pretty good but is a little different from the origional. It only costs 15 bucks and you have to paint it yourself.

Bill-

Craig is giving you the straight scoop on this. I just installed a new seat back and had to locate the threaded holes under the vinyl. If possible, I would keep the metal seat back because a decal goes there. If you are not interested in that, then get rid of the metal.

That thin metal piece is the remains of the old seat back. You can take it off and throw it away, but if it is not rusted out you can have it rebuilt.
Is your new seat back covered with black (or yellow) vinyl fabric? If it is like the cheap one I bought I eventually discoved 8 t-nuts under the fabric that are threaded to accept new bolts. This was after I drilled holes in the wood for wood screws. The T-nuts are arranged for two different mounting patterns. however none of them quite lined up with my seat frame.
Feel around on the fabric for the T-nuts, sometimes if you look close you can see a little X cut in the fabric where they are, or at least kind of close to where they are. Hope this helps.
