Are the following steps correct to check flywheel end play on a 1955 Model 60 (#6048041)?:
1. Tighten flywheel bolts to 208 ft/lbs.
2. Make sure clutch is adjusted properly and then engage it
3. Set dial indicator against flywheel
4. Push/pull flywheel and "hope" for .005" - .010" end play
Am I missing anything?
Thanks in advance

does the flywheel knock or do you have too much endplay.

Steve,
I HAD the knock problem at the clutch a couple of months ago, but a torque wrench took care of that! : )
No knocking now, but the belt pulley seems to "wobble" in and out a bit as load/engine speed changes.

With regards to factory specs, I've found that when folks work on these old tractors that have been running sometimes 10x outside any factory specs, they get worried about factory specs. These specs are set on new machines. While it would be a perfect world to have factory specs on a 50 year machine, in a lot of cases a feel for clearances improves them many times over the 50 year wear. I try to achive something similar to factory specs if possible but alway keep in mind the age factor.

you're missing the most important. DO NOT ENGAGE the clutch. Think about what's happening. With the clutch engaged pressure is being put to tighten clearance. Think of the clutch as independant of the crankshaft/like it not even there. Loose the large bolts. Tighten the large adjusting nut on flywheel till the flywheel seems to bind, I then loose slightly till it's free. If you are accurate enough with a dial indicator, get the factory specs, then retighten the flywheel bolts, I guess per your specs if they are factory. I've found then you tighten these it will change the end play. A long as it is not binding and will revolve free without end play you'll be okay. Trust this helps.
