I've been reading about the A mag, and now i'm confused. If you put the mag on, put the wires in, top post to the left plug, can you have it 180 off. If it fires on both strokes will it run better one way or is it the same. Mine is a wico X and it does not run just right so could i have it on wrong. It fires the left plug 1 inch before the left impulse gets to the mark. I guess what i'm asking does it matter which way it goes, and does just swapping plug wires do the same as turning the mag 180. Sorry for not understanding, but any help is appreciated, thanks ken.

Ken, I forgot to add one last thing. If it fires the left plug 1 inch before the mark as you stated, thats a little fast, and I would loosen the mags 2 bolts and rotate it CW to retard her a bit. If shes timed too fast, it may kick the flywheel backwards as shes firign before it reaches TDC. If you had it 180 out or wires on wrong terminals, it would backfire big time and kick back and all sorts of ugly things and not run at all. Ol John T Let us know what happens.

Good Morning Ken, I will try and un confuse things a little and hope it helps out. You have all the correct basic information below from clooney and steve, so here is a little more info to try n help you. Remember that the mag turns at crankshaft RPM and in the same direction. Also, the pistons are 180 opposite each other, when ones at TDC on top, the other is at the bottom of its stroke and back on top 180 later

1. As far as the left cyliner firing out the top mag terminal: For that to be so, the mag has to be installed so that at TDC on the Power Compression Stroke of the Left hand Cylinder, the Left Hand Impulse mark on the flywheel is at the 3 O Clock position and lined up with the mark on the tractors side.

2. NOW, if the mag is in 180 out, a simple reversal of the top and bottom wires would make her run BECAUSE if thats so, it would be the BOTTOM plug terminal that fires at TDC on the Power Stroke of the lefT hand cylinder.

3. The Wico C and X Mags fire at BOTH the TDC on BOTH cylinders Power and Exhaust Strokes and it came from the factory wired and timed so the left hand fires out the top terminal at TDC on its power stroke at Left hand Impulse flywheel mark at 3 O Clock. However, since it fires at TDC on BOTH strokes and the right cylinder fires 180 after the left, its possible if its in 180 out to reverse the wires and make her work.

4. Like clooney told you, it will NOT run if its in 180 out and the wires are not reversed. If in right, the top cap terminal fires the left cylinder and bottom terminal fires the right 180 later. HOWEVER, if its NOT in right it will NOT run UNLESS the wires are reversed.

5. Some other brand of mags fire at only TDC on the power stroke and not the exhaust stroke, so most of the above would not apply in this situation.

6. Finally to answer your question as to whether reversing the plug wires accomplishes the same as turning the mag 180. In theory and if there are NO differences in the cap or rotor or terminals or cam lobes, the answer is YES. However, due to possible slight differences in the cam lobe wear, the cap and rotor terminals condition and their exact locations etc., it may be possible that one side has a different spark than the other, but it will still work.

Good Luck n God Bless, hope this all helps and we havent cornfused you lol. Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Thanks John T. It is much clearer now. I'm going to slow the timing down some, i thought the mag turned opposite the crank, i been turning the wrong way to retard it thats why it's to fast now, because it does try to kick a little.I was thinking of the cam rotation, thanks again, Ken.

Ken, it is a little confusing... To answer your basic question. If you install the Wico X mag & have the top wire running to the left spark plug, AND IT RUNS, it isn't installed 180 off... If you then tried to swap the top & bottom wire IT WOULDN'T RUN because the spark would then be at bottom dead center & not top dead center. If you then pulled the mag & turned the shaft 180 & re-installed it, it would then run with the L/H plug wire in the bottom hole but not in the top hole. ~To answer your last question: It doesn't matter what way the mag [Wico C or X] is installed as long as the wires are on the correct cap tower so it will run. IT WILL NOT RUN IF THE PLUG WIRES ARE NOT IN THE CORRECT TOWER TO MATCH THE PISTON POSITION AT SPARK PRODUCTION. Just swapping the plug wires is the exact same as turning the mag position 180. [on a Wico C or X]
~Now that I have said all that, there could be a very slight difference in the running as the mag shaft bushings, points cam, impulse parts & cap contacts could be worn & effecting the spark slightly on one side & if the slightly out of time spark lined up with a low producing cylinder there could be a little difference, but that could happen with the mag installed either way so it's a toss up.
~Another way to look at the Wico X mag position is... when you move the plug wires from cap tower to tower you change the firing by 180 & when you rotate the mag shaft 180 you also change the firing by 180. So you can safely move one or the other & get a 180 change in spark, but if you move both at once you change nothing.

Thanks Clooney, i understand it better now, just going to play with timing now, Thanks again, Ken.

yeah I know, it needs to spark past the fly wheel marked line. L. H.... you may want turn it around 180 and see, just take both spark plugs out and wire on one spark plug on the left (leave it out) turn fly wheel slow till it snaps you may need to move the mag back and frontward till it sparks past the L. H... yes the top one on the Mag is left.

where are you from? I am in nebraska
my is a wico X too.

I'm in Louisiana. That mag stuff is confusing, but Clooney just put it pretty plain and i think i get it now. Just thought that might be my right cylinder problem, i think it's just a two cylinder characteristic. May back off the timing to where it snaps on the mark instead of before the mark, since there is no way to put a light on it. Thanks ken.
