I got a 49 B that starts up and then once it runs for about 2 to 5 mins it will quite on me. Its did this to me a couple of times now. It seems to be smoking alittle more than usally when it starts.

Our '47 b had quite a problem with carburetor icing until the dealer put a "hotter" manifold on it. Sorry tractor is long gone, and I was too young to remember details. Maybe someone else can shed more light on this.

I got her running today. I think I had alittle ice in my carb. I put a heat light over it for awhile. And she's runin just fine now. Thanks for all the advice everyone has gave me>

I had a similar problem on my model D. The solution came when I checked my oil bath air cleaner I found out that water entered into the oil which in turn froze sold and starved the air to the engine. Walt

It is still on a 6 volt with a mag. It started a couple of days ago. When it quites it spits and sputters and smokes more than normal. I check the fuel line and gas came out good and I opened the litte nut on the bottom of the carb and gas comes out goo through there.\

It has plenty of gas in the tank
I checked the spark plugs to they got a good blue spark
it doesn't put any black smoke at all when it starts or before it dies.'
Hope this will help you alittle more and thanks for all the information so far.

There isn't any school tomarrow due to school so I can work on her all day

Good Morning Bill, thanks for the feedback, it sure helps some, but its still a little hard to diagnose this over the net.

1. The sputterign before it dies sure sounds a lil more like a fuel than an ignition prob at this point. Does its choke have the cover with the lil spring inside it, or is it a direct connect like early units (carbs can be changed?) Regardless, I would remove the air cleaner pipe and inspect how well and positive the actual choke butterfly plate operates versus where the pull rod is located. While at that, inspect and service the air cleaner oil reservoir.

2. It looks like from the flow tests you performed, the needle valve and seat and fuel to the carb itself (and float bowl) is okay. It looks like you have a good blue spark as you described.

3. The clooney carb icing is sure a possibility in this type of weather, but I will offer a few more thigns and questions before signing off.

4. First, mag problems like points or condensor or coils that go bad after warm up doesnt seem so likely since she fails so fast, but are still candidates. Therfore, to satisfy my curiosity, why dont you do this and post back:

Remove the cap and insect it for cracks or carbon paths and clean it. Inspect the points for a 0.015 gap and see if they are pitted or burned or corroded or gray oxide coated????? ????? ???? If so, clean them and re gap them (not too abrasive to remove the silver) or if they are too bad simply replace them. Inspect to insure there are no wires shorted and that any kill switch post is not shorted.

After that, fire her up and if she starts to die see if choking helps and if [possible IMMEDIATELY check for the spark quality after she dies.

Im still not sure if its an ignition or fuel problem, but since it passes both flow tests thats a good sign, althouhg interior carb passages may still be a problem. Does frost from at the carb at any time????? ?? Look at the choke plate and air cleaner and the mag as I described and try her and post back. I again volunteer clooney to personally come there and fix it lol lol (Hes gonna kill me)

God Bless Ol John T Nordhoff

Bill, make sure the choke plate [inside the carb] is fully opening. Just because the choke rod is operating doesn't mean the plate inside the carb is working correctly [the pin under the little tin cover can jump over].
~As it is quitting, look for frost on the carb body, your explanation kind of sounds like carb icing. If you suspect carb icing try different gasoline & try to get some heat to the carb with a tin shield around the carb & manifold. Look in the air cleaner bowl for signs of water, if found clean the bowl out & add new oil.
~It doesn't sound like an ignition problem but a coil or condenser can sometimes act like a fuel problem so if nothing found with the choke or carb icing try a new condenser.
~If nothing stands out per above you will have to look for a spark & fuel just as it quits & see if you can catch it in the act.....

Bill, you could help us help you by telling us how it quits? Does it just quit like the ignition switch is turned off, or does it kind of surge a little & sputter a little before it quits? That will help determine if it's fuel or ignition problem.
~It would also help to know if you have a Mag or Distributor & what make & model of dist/mag you have?
~Can you also tell us when the problem started & how long it has been a problem?
~If it has a distributor with an external coil does the coil get real hot when it quits?
~Is the tractor still 6 volts or has it been converted to 12 volts?
~As John mentioned below it could be many things, but we can remove some of the guessing & try to point you closer to the problem if you can furnish more information..... ..

if you have a spare condenser around replace that, every time my A does that its always the condenser...

Bill, first of all we would need to try and determine if it quits because it starves for fuel, or the ignition stops working. Is it a mag or distributor ignition???

1. When it starts to quit, does choking help some??? Is there black or any smoke out the stack prior to its dying????

2. Right after it quits, if you remove the plugs but have their wires attached with the plugs against frame, are they both still producing a good blue spark or any spark??

3. Your problem could be caused by a carb restriction or a float problem, or a gas flow to carb problem, of if ignition, a coil or condensor or points problem, but its hard to say till you do some tests and post back more info.

4. If you turn on the gas and open the drain cock at the bottom of the carbs bowl, does it run a continuos pencil lead size stream of fuel out the bottom ???? If NOT, if you remove the fuel line from the carb and turn on the gas, does it run a continuous full line size good gas stream ????? ???

5. How long after it dies before it will restart????

6. Are you aware of how the actual choke butterfly is open and closed versus where the exterior choke rod is???

7. Have you removed and inspected the bototm oil bowl off the air cleaner lately???

In closing, you need to see if you still have a good or any spark to the plugs when she dies or if it seems to be running out of fuel causing her to die, or even floodign out causes her to die. If she black smokes big time then dies, it may be a choke butterfly problem or a float problem or air starvation. If she has no fuel but still is sparking, (see if choking helps then) it may be a carb or gas flow problem. If she has fuel but quits sparking, its an ignition problem.

Do some tests and post abck and maybe we can talk you trhough carb or ignition troubleshooting in more detail. from waht you said and the short period, I suspect a gas flow or carb problem for now. Good Luck n God Bless, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana
