Hi All,

I'm working over a nice old 44 A I found on a fence row. It's a nice old unabused tractor, but was stuck hard.

After getting the block off and pistons pressed out, I realized the crank was still stuck! The oil pump seemed locked up, so I dropped it out amd the the crank will turn now, but it sure has some very tight spots as the flywheel rotates.

The crankcase was dry, except for a little sludge in the bottom. The only real problem I found was the big camshaft drive gear was very loose on the cam shaft (all three bolts were loose, but still in the gear). The cylinders will hone out and the bearings look good.

What I'm wondering - were the cam gears bad to work loose or would it be common for the oil pump to lock down or get real hard to turn and it cause the cam gear to work loose?? I sure don't want to re-use this oil pump if it was what caused the trouble in the first place!

Thanks for any opinions!
Howard H.

Howard, the oil pump is the lowest thing in the crankcase so water tends to settle there & rust the pump up. ~Given what you have said above you really should pull the main bearing housings & pull the pump apart & look for rust & bad spots on the crank mains & oil pump gears. Something is causing a tight spot & that tight spot should be identified before you put it back together, I doubt that a loose cam gear is the problem but should be repaired before re-assembling the engine.
~That oil pump being tight didn't cause a loose cam gear, those cam gear bolts must be the correct ones & be tight with the lock plate ears bent up over the bolt sides or they will come loose....

These bolts are prone to loosen for some reason. There was a post not long ago on this maybe you can find it.
